Synaptics Pointing Device
Hi I have new Laptop with Vista and the Synaptics Pointing Device but all of
a sudden the device has stopped working, i can still use it to move the
pointer around the screen but can no longer use it to scroll pages.
I have tried clicking on it in the tool bar but this has no effect, though
it comes up with its name if I leave the pointer on it. I can find nothing in
the control panel regarding it and have tried searching for it but it comes
up with no results. Can someone please tell me how to get it working again.
Thank you.
Re: Synaptics Pointing Device
In addition to Spirit's advice in this thread, they also have a
troubleshooting section at their website:
http://www.synaptics.com/support/troubleshooting.cfm
That said, if you have the latest drivers, if this is a relatively recent
issue, you might try using System Restore to take you back to a time prior
to when this began. System Restore is designed to restore your settings and
registry to a specific point in time but as a precaution you should make
sure your data is well backed up before using it. Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Restore.
Additionally, you would most likely find your pointing device listed in
Device Manager under tasks in the left column under System in Control Panel.
Re: Synaptics Pointing Device
i dont suppose you know who that would be?
Also have found on a website how to disable the device so intended to do the
reverse. However, it tells me to click on the mouse icon in the control
panel, but again this has no effect.
RE: Synaptics Pointing Device
I also bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and the Synaptics Pointing
Device. For the last two days, the touchpad operation has been driving me
crazy. On my computer there is a Synaptics Touchpad icon. I clicked on it
and pulled up their control window. It has mouse tabs up top but the device
listed in the box is Synaptics Pointing Device. Click on the top right hand
tab Devices. It will bring up another screen where you can select
Properties. Click on properties. You can now make the mousepad do almost
anything you want. The only problem I have now is to solve the problem of
the cursor opening programs when it over something and I am not touching the
touchpad. I feel like this might be in the Vista program. Hope this helps.
Re: Synaptics Pointing Device
Check the settings, I have seen settings that if you hover for more than 2
seconds it will open the program just like clicking.
I guess everyone has their likes/dislikes, but to me that is just too much.
Synaptics Pointing Device
Hi,
Have an HP9740, just a few months old, with Vista Home Premium. On start-up
I sometimes get a message that the SPD has ceased to function and the prog.
will close. The pad continues to work, but not the scroll function.
Re-starting restores it, but it will often fail again. At other times it
works fine. Would be very grateful for any ideas as to what is wrong. It
first happened around the time I was installing a codec pack, WinRar, Veoh
and the like. Could this have interfered with the Synapics device?
I know I can use the arrows to scroll, but I find this failure very
annoying.
Would be grateful for any help, but must point out that I am largely
clueless when it comes to the technical aspects of computers.
Re: Synaptics Pointing Device
Yes, software that you think has nothing to do with other software can
impact the other software. I'm not saying this is your case, but certainly
it can happen.
Go to HP's tech support website (Downloads and Drivers) for your specific
model computer and download the drivers for the Synaptics touchpad. Install
them and see if that solves the issue. If it doesn't, then a call to HP
tech support might be in order. Or post back with what happens after you
install the drivers. Make sure to include the exact text of any error
messages.
Re: Synaptics Pointing Device
Hi, and thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Will try what you suggest.
Had thought along those lines after reading similar posts here, but was a bit
wary in case I had to uninstall what is already there and then ended up with
nothing! From experience, operations that sound simple in practice often end
up giving novices like me all sorts of unexpected problems and headaches!

Re: Synaptics Pointing Device
Thnx for the help (though you'll prob nvr read this thread again).
I found my scroll not working and had no icon on the toolbar. I had to 'Roll Back' my driver before getting windows to search for and install the previous driver that had stuffed up. Only with your help
