It depends on the versions and editions you buying. For example:
If it is a retail copy, you can install it on only one computer at a time.
If it is an OEM Copy, you cannot install it on any other system ever apart from the system it came along. It comes with new branded pc and dies with the same.
If it is Home and Student, you will be able to install it on upto 3 PCs at a time.
Am not sure about this but I was having Office 2007 Pro and was able to install it on my Desktop and my wife’s laptop both. I guess it can be installed on any 2 devices. Also I don’t think if it is illegal Microsoft of Police would breaking down your door. I just tried and it worked on my 2 systems. But yeah, I only know about Office Home and Student 2007, it works upto 3 systems. Also I think Office Enterprises edition provides some good numbers of systems to be installed.
