Re: Fix the damn "Calculating Time Remaining" problem already!
Perhaps we need an time remaining for the calculate time reamining
calculation? rofl
Seriously what's the point of estamating the time reamining when your
transfering 1 large file and it won't tell you a time until it transfers at
least 1 file?
Serioulsy! I'd like to know about when a 6 gig the transfer will be done
BEFORE the file is done transfering.

RE: Fix the damn "Calculating Time Remaining" problem already!
Perhaps this is not the proper place to ask this question, but my dilemma
seems even more frustrating. I can't even simply right-click on a file under
documents (or wherever) and "sent to" the usb. Neither can I right click on a
jpeg and choose "open with" without the Vista business just continuing to
swirl and getting me nowhere. Never had this problem of course with XP!

RE: Fix the damn "Calculating Time Remaining" problem already!
Whenever I DELETE a file, Why does it take so long??? Calculating time
remaining is the same on a small file or a large file. How can I delete a
file and have it just do that one simple task without taking so long?? There
must be a registry fix or ammend. Ive tried Microsofts "HOTFIX" but to no
avail. ANy Ideas??
Thanks for your time,

It's a known issue that Microsoft admits to. Hopefully it will get
fully resolved once SP1 gets released late this year or early next.
You can reduce it somewhat, but only sometimes if you also take over
ownership of all your hard drives making whatever user you log in as
have full permissions which you can change/add by going to the
security tab for each of your drives. I don't suggest you mess with
your root drive however, Vista claims that as it's own and don't like
you to fiddle with it.
This issue is often spit on by this newsgroup's idiots of which sadly
there are several that don't know any better, one in particular, named
Frank, the newsgroup resident moron.
It is a real issue, Microsoft is aware of it. Hopefully they will
fully fix it soon it is probably driving millions of people nuts.
One 'cure' is to not to use Windows Explorer for
copying/moving/deleting instead using some third party shell none of
which have this problem proving it is indeed an exclusive Vista
specific issue. It doesn't effect all systems, just some, so those
that don't have it being the crude no knowing morons they are will
constantly try to make fun of those that do experience it.

Wait for SP1 due out soon, I believe they have fixed it in there.

sent by MS.
and delete, copy to, move to, are rather about the same as XP... last test
3.86 GB delete is 3s, move to 2m25s, copy to 2m35s.
make sure you have all the autoupdates...
I am not using SP1 either...

But those are all bugs. Fanboys tell us Vista has no bugs. Who should
I believe, some detailed web site that list the problems and offers a
hopeful solution or should I listen to some raving loon like Frankie
that screams everyone that has problems is an idiot and don't know
what they're doing and didn't install Vista correctly. Hmm... hard
choice. I better sleep on it.

RE: Fix the damn "Calculating Time Remaining" problem already!
To the world: This might help a little. I have been having this problem and
I found that a work around is to transfer files in zip format. I was trying
to transfer a directory and it would take forever. The time kept mounting,
as we all know. By transfering as a zip file it took less than a second. I
think the problem lies in the fact that Vista trys to examine all of the
files and folders within the folder. Possibly this has something to do with
defender but I haven't been able to verify that yet. I plan on turning off
defender to see if this helps. But for now, if you transfer files, to get
them to go at some resonable speed, zip them, then transfer.

RE: Fix the damn "Calculating Time Remaining" problem already!
I think I have solved the problem. At least for me. Let me explain what my
problem was and the steps that I used to fix it.
Problem: Transfering a file or folder from anywhere to anywhere takes
forever.
Proceedure: As I worked through this issue I discovered that it only took
a long time to transfer FOLDERS not FILES. If I was copying a file it would
go over pretty quickly. It was when I tried to transfer over folders that it
went into the "calulating forever" mode. Next, I tried to copy over a zip
file. It went perfectly. Just like it should. My suspicions were that
something was examining the folders in detail. I suspected that Defender was
the culprit. I disabled Defender and my problem was solved. No more long
times for file/folder transfers. My guess is that the algorithm that
defender uses to check files is flawed.
Solution: Turn off Defender until SP1.

Turning off defender didn't quite do it.
Ok, I still have a slight problem. Turning off defender helped but it also
has something to do with the complexity of what you are trying to copy. If
it is just files they go over quick. If there are folders within folders
(like there is in almost everything worth copying) then it still takes time
to figure out what to do. But at least it starts. Before with defender on
it wouldn't even start. The wait time kept getting longer and longer.

RE: Fix the damn "Calculating Time Remaining" problem already!
This same thing happened to me. I called tech support. He said this was a
virus that caused this problem because if you reboot in safe-mode and try to
move-delete-add a file it doesn't do it. So I would recommend trying to get
rid of the virus (name unknown) or as I did completely re-install Vista.
Mine works good as new and fast now. Good luck!
