HP Scanjet 3400c
HP have stated that they do not intend producing drivers for this scanner to
run under Vista. The scanner is recognised in the Scanners and Cameras
Control Panel but its status is shown as "unavailable". Can anyone suggest
how I can get this scanner working with Vista please
-
Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
You could try XP drivers.
I got the same info for my scanner (5470c), but the XP drivers seem to work
just fine.

Just curious but did you know it was a discontinued product prior to
upgrading to Vista?
My work around for my HP 5470c scanner (also discontinued by HP and yes
I knew it before upgrading) was to plug it into my wife's XP machine.

Yes - I knew it was a discontinued product but the HP web site did not
indicate that they would not issue Vista drivers until well after Vista was
released. - I've tried XP drivers but they dont seem to work.

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
Did you try to run the install program in XP compatibility mode
(after uninstalling, if possible, anything left over from your original
install)?

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
Try installing the XP version software using Compatibility mode set to
XP with SP2 and Run as Administrator?
If it's USB connected remember you must disconnect the USB cable from
the PC and the printer and turn off the printer before starting to
install the HP software.
Check that there is no HP software for the scanner installed already;
if there is uninstall it and delete the scanner from the Control Panel
/ Scanner folder and reboot -- without that cable connected!
You might have to go into Services and disable Windows Image
Acquisition (WIA) but I have a much older HP SJ5P scanner working using
the TWAIN conection.
If this works you may find that the scanner does not appear in the Fax
& Scan module but will work using the HP software.
If this does not work and you really want to try something, uninstall
the HP software that did not work and clean up as I indicated earlier.
Download the HP Deskscan 2.9 software sj166en.exe 1/1 (4.65M) from:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...DownloadIndex?
cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&softwareitem=sj-34132-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
and run that as before using compatibility mode and run as
administrator.
This is the HP scanning software before Precisionscan came out and we
often recommended it over the later software. It's what I've been using
under W2K, XP and now under VISTA. It works fine including the neat
copy utility.
Let us know how you get on.

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
Rob.... I have a scanjet 4400 C and I will be trying out various methods to
see if I find a solution.
Do you come in this newsgroup often? I will be trying this in a couple of
days..
I can post my findings with the subject line "PING ROB"
(I have a huge amount of XP drivers on some cds that I want to try that are
called "universal")
Perhaps one of those will do... I also will try other methods to outsmart
vista...

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
Thanks for the information. I have tried uninstalling the scanner, rebooting
and then installing the original PrecisionScan software in compatibility mode
and running as administrator. The sofware installs OK and when I plug in the
scanner I'm told that the scanner is ready for use. When I start
PrecisionScan I get an error message - Scanner not found.
I uninstalled again and downloaded sj166en.exe. I unzipped the file and
tried to run all the setup.exe files in compatiblity mode and as administator
but get a message "Can't run 16-bit windows program"
Any further help would be appreciated.

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
Hi Former Captain of the Enterprise. I come into the newsgroup at least two
or three times a week so I can check for "Ping Rob" if you get any sucess (or
otherwise). You might like to see my reply to Hugh Wyn Griffith to see my
results following his suggestions - they might spark off some ideas. Thanks
for your help

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
I have overcome the "16-bit" problem but when I try to install the DeskScan
program I seem to come to a halt because the program is looking for a SCSi
card - my scanner connection is USB.

It would be a lot more helpful to post them with a meaningful subject
so we can search for them later.
PS Have a look at my post about even using Deskscan 2.9

I'm glad to hear that -- I just checked the Install Log for Deskscan
and it definitely installed 32 bit stuff:
Source File Version
----------------------------------------
TWAIN.DLL 1.7.0.0
TWAIN_32.DLL 1.7.1.3
TWUNK_16.EXE 1.7.0.0
TWUNK_32.EXE 1.7.1.0
MFC40.DLL 4.1.0.6140
but I guess I struck out on USB.
A Google on [TWAIN +USB] shows that they are not incompatible since
Epson uses them with Mac's and if you search on [TWAIN +USB -Epson]
there are plenty of other hits.
But I have to say that I can't say how to get around this -- other than
buying a scis card, which might cost more than a new scanner 8:(

RE: HP Scanjet 3400c
I think I might have found a solution to my problem - at least the scanner is
now working in Vista.
I did the following:
With the scanner connected I uninstalled the scanner in Device Manager
(Control Panel) including the driver. I then disconnected the scanner. Next I
installed HP PrecisionScan LTX from the original CD by selecting Setup.exe
from the English folder and ran it in XP SP2 compatibility mode and as
Administrator. When the installation was complete I connected the scanner and
a driver was installed. The next step was to find and download the file
SJ651MU.EXE which is a driver update for XP. This was run in XP SP2
compatibility mode and as administrator. My scanner now works.
I don't know if this will work generally but it is probably worth a try.
Thanks to all who tried to help

RE: HP Scanjet 3400c
Solution did not last - next time I rebooted PC the scanner was not
recognised again - Oh well - back to the drawing board!

Re: HP Scanjet 3400c
Congratulations!
It's critical with USB connected devices to not install software with
the device connected -- even the USB cable must be disconnected from
the PC until [Finish] or until the installation tells you to connect.
I'm sorry if I didn't include this in earlier suggestions. (Ooops -- I
see I did <g>)
