What is error code 0x80070643 during MSSQL Server 2005 SP2 update?

I am receiving the following error during online widows update for MSSQL
Server 2005:

"Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x80070643: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2
(KB 921896)."

I am unable to locate any support info on microsoft's website.

Any help will be appreciated.

Ok, I've got the same error with online update after a new installation of SQL Server 2005 (180 day trial).
I followed the link given by Matt: http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527/
and looked at the error code 0x80070643 But the information appears to be only about this error code with an MS Office update.

Anyone else have this error and solved it please?

I have exactly the same problem.

I can not install SQL Server Express Edition SP2 either.

I have tried direct from MS update and via wsus 3 sp1.

The Logo files shows

14:29:35:852+0800 1 182 101 {32CB94A3-B1EF-40DE-86A8-8FBF053D800E} 100 80070643 MicrosoftUpdate Failure Content
Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update
with error 0x80070643: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack

2008-09-04 14:29:48:430 6460 10ec Handler : MSI transaction completed.
MSI: 0x00000000, Handler: 0x00000000, Source: No, Reboot: 0

Any help would be apprecated.

This is the page that comes up first on googling for "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 921896). " which is, I expect, what a lot of people google for when they encounter this problem. I am therefore leaving my solution here in hopes that it is helpful to the next man.

This error can be caused by the file DTSSVCPERF.INI being missing. I discovered this examining the DTS9 hotfix install log file (DTS9_Hotfix_KB921896_sqlrun_dts.msp.log), wherein this error message can be found:

Error copying file(c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTSSVCPERF.INI) to file(c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\perf-DTSSVCPERF.INI). Error code 2

I obtained a copy of DTSSVCPERF.INI, and for good measure DTSSVCPERF.H, from an installation which had them. Since these files are not easily locatable if they are missing I am including them below. They should both go in the c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\ directory:

I trust that Microsoft will not mind this minor copyright violation as the dissemination of these files will only serve to fix their customers' problems.

Please note that while this solved the problem for me there could be other causes. You need to look at your log files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\ for the most recent summary and the any file referencing the KB921896. Scrolling to the end, then back up looking for errors will hopefully let you determine whether this fix will work for you.
