VHP - KB905866 breaks Windows restore
Just bought an Acer Aspire 9301AWSMi c/w Windows Vista Home Premium.
The first thing I tried, after allowing Windows automatic update to run
it's course, was to try Windows restore - every one of the restore
points failed with an unspecified error.
Done a factory restore and downnloaded the updates one at a time by
release date, and found that "Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter
[February 2007] (KB905866)" is the one that messes things up for me.

Re: VHP - KB905866 breaks Windows restore
Can you give me the exact text of the error you received. Was there an error
code by chance?
Re: VHP - KB905866 breaks Windows restore
Try as I might, I can't reproduce the above. I have performed a factory
restore and re downloaded/installed the windows updates several times,
and now windows restore points are working fine.
The only relevant errors I see in the logs are -
Level,Date and Time,Source,Event ID,Task Category
Error,17/03/2007 14:42:32,Microsoft-Windows-Servicing,4375,None,Windows
Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB905866
(Update) into Staging(Staging) state
Error,17/03/2007 14:42:32,Microsoft-Windows-Servicing,4385,None,Windows
Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update 905866-2
_RTM_LDR from package KB905866(Update) into Staging(Staging) state
Error,17/03/2007 14:42:32,Microsoft-Windows-Servicing,4385,None,Windows
Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update 905866-1
_RTM_GDR from package KB905866(Update) into Staging(Staging) state
The above 3 errors are duplicated for each update.
The upshot of this is, I can no longer perform a factory restore using
alt+F10 at boot (it seems the "hidden" partition, which is still present
in disk manager, can't be accessed) or recover from from the Acer user
backup images I have made. Fortunately, I burned a factory restore disk
which is still functional.
