The machine in question is a Server 2003 64bit edition.

quick update. I ran the client diag tool and received this error:

GetCurrentUserIEProxy . . . . . FAILED

Verifyproxy() failed with hr=0x80070002

The system cannot find the file specified.

Is this system trying to use an auto-proxy-configuration file that it cannot find?

Also check your WSUS server and make sure the /clientwebservice is pointing to the correct pathname, and contains the client.asmx file, among others.

Thanks for your help. I have 172 machines that will not update. Some of them
pass the client diag tool no problem, some fail in the same place that this
machine did. They all have these errors in the windowsupdate log:

Another update. The Client Diag Tool still shows the same arror when i run it on this machine. I came in this morning and the status for this machine was updated in WSUS. Here is the update log from that machine, i still see the same error though. No idea why it worked this time.

0x80070002 - ERROR FILE NOT FOUND

I need to research this one. But, in generall, this is the point at which the CDT tests the availability of the contents in the selfupdate virtual directory, so you might start with verifying the accessibility of the WSUS
server from this client.

Hello,
same problem here, running x64 servers with both SP1 or SP2 installed ... Not having the same behavior on 32 bit systems in the same network, It seems related only to x64 bits machines/code.

Hello,
I've followed the suggestion in this post (http://www.mcseboard.de/ windows-forum-ms-backoffice-31/fehler-0x80070002-file-not-found- windowsupdate-log-nur-109325.html) to create a 'Auto Update' subkey in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate".

Now the WSUS client diagnostic (ClientDiag.exe) doesn't complain anymore, but the WindowsUpdate.log still complains ...

I'm pretty convinced that the reason why I just wasn't able to install SP2 for MSSQL Server 2005 is fairly similar to yours (I'm also proudly running x64 box for years by now).

%SystemRoot%\WindowsUpdate.log is full of rubbish, it distracts your attention from the "real" log, which is available usually at the following path: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9_Hotfix_KB948109_sqlrun_sql.msp.log", this path is visible from the Application event log MsiInstaller entries.

If you read it (after you hardly find it in tons of garbage), everything becomes cristally clear - here I'll put the excerpt from my logs that explains what's really eating MSSQL setup. Poor little thing said:

"MSP Error: 28062 SQL Server Setup cannot install files to the compressed or encrypted folder: c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\. To continue, make sure that your installation directories are not compressed or encrypted, or specify a different directory, and then run SQL Server Setup again."

So I decompressed the directory (and 300MB disappeared, of course) - and installation finished successfully.

Unfortunately, wuauclt.exe is completely unaware of MSSQL server setup and the errors it suffers - somebody could even draw obviously wrong conclusion that these products are made by different companies...

P.S. As you can see, I'm writing this one year after the original post, and still nothing is improved. Jeez, I'd like to work in Microsoft, too. Obviously, stress is passed to the end user :)
