Has anyone seen this before in the windowsupdate.log file? Well more importantly, does anyone know how to fix it. The clients with outstanding updates are giving me this in the logs. The self update stuff is fine. It
knows which updates to get, but can't download them. Sometimes I see the little shield in the taskbar, but it stays at the same percentage, and disappears soon.

I too have got this error with a Windows 2000 Server. Other machines on this server are fine.
No Proxy Server I have removed the internet temp cache files and Sofware Distribution directory too.
Anyone got any ideas? - Thanks

Yes.. the 0x80072efd is an error quite commonly seen. 0x80072efd - ERROR INTERNET CANNOT CONNECT
It's caused because there's something 'broken' in the network infrastructure or the WSUS server is not respondent, or is not able to respond.
Essentially the '2efd' error is what the WUA logs when it does not get a response to web service request.
The specific cause is determined by the context of the error. If you post the entries from the log showing the entire detection cycle, it's probable that I can identify the specific fault in your environment.
You should also run the Client Diagnostic Tool on one of these client systems, and post the results.

My suspicion in this case, Simon, is that the URL is incorrect, and nothing is answering to the specified URL.
Opps found the issue
Someone (not me) removed the port in the firewall. To quote him we didn't need that port (aggghrhhhrhhhh)

Okay. I actually put in a call to Microsoft because I needed this resolved right away. What we found was that there was an update that was 'stuck' and couldn't be downloaded. Once we cleared the BITS queue and the software distribution folder, we did a /detectnow, and everything is cool again.

I'm receiving the same error, but I've checked on the network configuration settings and they appear to be correct:
In my GPO, I specify an SSL connection for clients connecting to the WSUS 3.0 RC server. As you'll see in the log below, the server specified is https://wsus01.companyname.com.
1) Firewall is set correctly. From either inside or outside the firewall, I can browse to https://wsus01.companyname.com fine without getting a certificate error (I installed a recognized SSL cert.)
2) I ran the ClientDiag and it passed all the tests.
3) I did all the WinHTTP proxy stuff. We have no proxy server, and I confirmed that it is configured for Direction Connection.
Here's a current sniped from the WindowsUpdate.log file. Notice near the beginning the invalid reference to http, while on the last line it does correctly reference https. The fiirewall is only open for port 443, not 80. Further, my GPO does specify https://....., not http.

Did you exclude the appropriate virtual directories, as documented in the SSL Setup Instructions of the WSUS Deployment Guide, that cannot have SSL =required=? (They would include selfupdate and content, the critical ones, among others.)
That was it. I applied the changes as documented in the SSL config. section of the deployment guide. Moments later stuff started going through.
