Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
This is a clean installation on a new PC of Vista, yet when I try to use
Photo Gallery I get a message after about 5 secs that Windows Photo Gallery
has stopped working with an action button saying Close Program. I've tried
removing all my pictures, but the problem persists.
Any help please?

Hi Ian,
I am having exactly the same problem with Windows Photo Gallery, so
you're not alone. I have tried repairing windows with my Vista CD but it
makes no difference. I also discovered that the restore facility on Vista can
easily be switched off by mistake. This happened to me and I don't have any
restore points to help me fix the problem with Windows Photo Gallery. Bring
back the XP restore facility any day. I hope Microsoft takes notice of this
fault and posts a fix soon.
Can anyone else suggest something?
Chas.
RE: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
Ian -
I am having the exact same problem. One day, out of the blue, Windows Photo
Gallery just stopped working. I get the old pop-up window that says "Windows
Photo Gallery has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop
working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a
solution is available". That's all I get. Nothing else. I don't get what
happened.
Any advice or help would be appreciated. Makes no sense.
Also, can I put in OS reinstallation DVD and just repair the Windows Photo
Gallery app? If so, how do I do that?
Thanks.

RE: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
There is a quick fix for this problem that worked for me.
1) Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders
2) Navigate to: [drive
letter]:\Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery
3) Delete all contents (or back up if you wish)
4) Start Windows Photo Gallery
All files should still be there, and options should stay intact, but problem
should be resoved. It may take a minute or so to rebuild your photo gallery.
Hope this helped!

Re: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
Having also the same issue for a few days (it's been 6 month I use window
photo gallery ...). The solution of Dave.G worked until I rebuilt my photo
gallery.
Looks like Microsoft is working on the issue, does anyone have more
information about it ? Any other idea to fix it ?
Thanks.

RE: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
I have a similar problem...
I am using Vista Home Premium.
I can run Windows Photo Gallery on start up of Vista.
However, if I exit either through File Exit or clicking on X, the program
appears to exit. But it is actually running in the background when I check
the Task Manager, usually taking up about 28 MB. If I try to restart Photo
Gallery again, nothing happens.
If I kill the process then run WPG again, it works fine?!?
I was thinking maybe it is trying to do something in the background to do
with the database it built of my pictures. I do have a fairly large Pictures
folder that is indexed by WPG, about 9 GB.
Any suggestions on fixes?
Thanks.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
Go to Control Panel (Classic view) > Problem Reports and Solutions, click the
"View problem history" link in the left blue pane. Right click on a problem and
select "View Details". Sometimes the module that is causing the problem is
very evident. If this does not give you an idea of what is causing the problem,
click the "Copy to clipboard" link in the lower left corner of the window and
past into a reply to this thread.

RE: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
My problem with the Windows Photo Gallery is that when I import my movies
from the camcorder, and try to watch or view them, I get the message :this
video could not be displayed." I would like to try the solution that Dave
offered but when I am on the \Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Photo Gallery, I see 2 items which are as follows: NavTree.State and
Pictures.pd4. Hence I don't which one to highlight to delete. Could you
help me or is there anyone who knows the solution.
Any input is appreciated.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
My problem is that the gallery is showing my pictures but not my video.
Nothing I've done will correct the problem. I downloaded Windows Live
Gallery (beta) and it is very similar in operation. It works fine, showing
both pictures and video, but the gallery is still not seeing any videos. I
was hoping that the Live Gallery would replace (and fix) the Vista gallery,
as I don't need both, but no go.
Vista definitely needs some mechanism to repair applications that have
become damaged. My restore points never make it beyond a week without
disappearing (another problem!), so system restore is pretty worthless to me.
The last time I tried SR, I got an error message saying it couldn't do the
restore! No explanation of why. I've deleted all restore points and tried
to fix that problem several times, also to no avail.
Re: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
Problems started with my photo gallery not working on the screen saver slide
show and now none of my videos can be viewed.
I'll try the apparent temporary fixes listed by others and hope we don't
have to wait too long for something permenant.
Re: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
The only thing that worked for me was a reinstall of Vista over the previous
install. In other words, I did un upgrade install, but upgraded from Vista
itself. I don't know if that approach is well-documented by Microsoft, but
it worked for me. I had to reinstall all the updates and a few drivers, but
for the most part my programs worked fine after the "upgrade" and photo
gallery again displayed my videos.
RE: Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working
I am having the same problem, though thankfully I also have Nero to work
with. I will try some of the suggestion. It would be nice if someone from
Microsoft read these messages and tried to help.
