file corruption

I have two servers running Windows 2K3 Enterprise Edition connected to a disk
storage unit via fiber channel. They are not part of a cluster, however,
when connected the 2nd server to the disk unit, I started getting the
following errors in the event logs of both servers:

Event ID: 257, Source: PlugPlayManager
"Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of
"C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE"

Event ID: 55, Source: NTFS
"The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run
the chkdik utility on the volume cluster set."

When I look up these event ID's in Microsoft's Knowledgebase, The TID's
state that these errors are informational and can be ignored. However, I am
getting files that are being flagged as corrupt and cannot be accessed. When
I reboot, the chkdsk utility launches on the drive they both are sharing on
the disk unit.

You cannot have two different servers accessing the same NTFS-disk
simultaneously.

You can NEVER have two different servers accessing the same NTFS-disk
simultaneously

When you do, you WILL have data corruption.

Ensure only one server accesses a disk.

I totally agree. The NTFS file system is not designed to handle multiple
servers accessing it simultaneously. With Microsoft clusters, MSCS is a
"Shared nothing" cluster model. MSCS has a built in filter driver that
controls access to the disks. It is this cluster disk driver which prevents
this sort of corruption from occurring in a cluster.

Without cluster software to control access to the drive, corruption will
always occur.
