Error shadow copy 800423f1 when using ntbackup
I couldn't find any reference to this error message on Microsoft KB yet. Any help as where to search will be welcome. Thanks. Mcrosoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition Version 5.2.3790 Service Pack 1. It runs Exchange 2007, SQL 2005, Office SharePoint Server 2007. When using ntbackup to backup system state (scheduled job) you can see this error message on ntbackup log.

Interactive backup fails as well. It keeps retrying and the GUI says "Waiting to retry shadow copy..."

There is a hotfix available for the same. The issue is associated with Volume Shadow Copy Service. From the below link download the hotfix and run the same. This might fix the issue. The link also has more detail information about troubleshooting the problem. And you can see various other kb article linked. If you are facing the issue through some third party tool then it is not going to help much.

There is one more fix available for this problem. This can be done through resolving registry entries. Sometime a missing registry cause the problem and you can fix the same through adding it back. But do not forget to backup your registry files before doing the same. If any other error is generated after modifying you can still restore the old settings back. Just follow the procedure in the link. Add values wherever needed and then check back.
