RE: KB923980 keeps updating
Same with me. Also the update history shows sucessful update. I removed all
the 3 KB's for this throught Control Panel then reinstalled from the download
site and still get the update notice after every 5 minutes. So far its only
for KB923980.
Maybe a little more infor would help those kind folks at MS. Running XP Home
SP2, just installed IE7, also have Zone Alarm, AVG and Spybot. I also used
Spybot and Eazy Clean to clean registry but problem was there both before and
after the reg cleaning.
Re: KB923980 keeps updating
SOLVED. Scroll down to the bottom of this site.
http://www.amset.info/windows/auto-updates.asp
Reinstall the automatic updates service, or do all three, reset, repair
and reinstall, which I did.
An excellent helpful website I came across whilst sorting out the
windows update 100% CPU bug.
Re: KB923980 keeps updating
Uninstall the failed update from Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel. Next, show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Navigate to WINDOWS\system32
Rename Nwapi32.dll to Nwapi32.old
Download the update manually from -
Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 —
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c-44dc4a54f91e
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 —
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-e4dbfc050667
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service
Pack 1 —
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-6cced2ee9285
Save it, close the browser, install it, and restart the system.
Revisit Windows/Microsoft Update to see if it's offered.
The files updated for XP SP2 are -
Nwapi32.dll
Nwprovau.dll
Nwwks.dll
Nwrdr.sys
They should all be at version 5.1.2600.3015
The .dll files are located in WINDOWS\system32
The .sys is located in WINDOWS\system32\drivers
Right click the files, choose Properties, then click the Version tab to
confirm that the correct files are present.
To confirm the correct versions are present in Win 2K and Windows Server
2003, go here :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS06-066.mspx
Click the plus sign next to Security Update Information.
Thanks to Ariel Monaco for this workaround !
Re: KB923980 keeps updating
Upon further investigation, the below steps are intended for XP Pro.
For XP Home Edition, renaming Nwprovau.dll to Nwprovau.old may be the
key to getting KB923980 installed properly and not be reoffered.
Suggest that anyone who has XP HE installed give that a shot.
The KB923980.log, located in WINDOWS, should show this after the
successful installation -
16.564: Copied file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\nwprovau.dll
16.584: Copied file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\nwprovau.dll
16.684: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwrdr.sys
16.894: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwwks.dll
17.015: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwprovau.dll
17.335: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwapi32.dll
Re: KB923980 keeps updating
Yes, I tried it and it works, however I cant find these two files in my
windows/system32/drivers,
16.684: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwrdr.sys
16.894: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwwks.dll
but i changed nwprovau.dll and nwapi32.dll, and it works.
A new file is created in place of nwprovau.old, but nothing happens
after renaming nwapi32.dll to nwapi32.old, so after the update was
successful, I simply rename it back to nwapi32.dll.
Re: KB923980 keeps updating
It worked all of one restart. Now Im being offered the update again.
As I said I cant find these files
> 16.684: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwrdr.sys
> 16.894: Copied file: c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923980\SP2QFE\nwwks.dll,
could that be the problem?
Re: KB923980 keeps updating
Is this XP Home Edition ? Here's the files as listed by MS that need to
be renamed to .old -
nwapi32.dll ( not present in XP HE )
nwprovau.dll
nwwks.dll
All of the above files are in WINDOWS\system32
nwrdr.sys ( resides in WINDOWS\system32\drivers )
Later threads indicate that rebooting after renaming the files is
required. Then manually install the update and reboot again.
