Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) fails to install. I get an Error
Code: 0x643. I have tried Update a second time and it still fails. I upgraded
Flash Player and still got the same error. I opened an SRZ but that process
could take awhile. Any ideas?
RE: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
This update failed for me also. I can not find KB923789 in the knowledge base.
When I click on the red x in update history for help, nothing happens. I
don't even know if I have Adobe Flash player installed. I can't find it.

When I click on the red x I get the window that provides the error code. You
can get flash player at Adobe's WEB site.

Re: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
Don't bother - today Adobe posted a new Flash Player - version 9.0.28.0

Re: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
I wrote to MS and they asked me to do a manual install. When I tried it I
received an error message that the "version of Macromedia Flash you have
installed does not match the update you are trying to install". I then went
to add/remove programs and uninstalled Flashplayer which was version 8. Then
opened IE which asked me to install Flashplayer because it could not render
the page properly. I proceeded to install the Flashplayer, which took 2
attempts and I check with the Flashplayer checker which can be located with
Google to be sure it was installed. Do not forget to reboot after the
installation and before using the checker.
I then went to IE and did the windows update. With the new Flashplayer,
apparently the update is not necessary because it did not appear. Closed case!
Hope this helps someone.

RE: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
I got the 9.0.28.0 version of Flash Player installed and the requirement for
the security update is no longer present.
This is the first time I realized that I may have different versions of
Flash Player in Fire Fox and Internet Explorer. In FF I have 8.0.24.0 In I.E.
I have 9.0.28.0.
I guess that's OK.

RE: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
It's even worse than that. I have a different version for IE, FF2.0 and
Dreamweaver. Seems like we are wasting much memory here in having to store
the same program in several versions.

Re: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
I had the same problem. Windows Update "wanted" to install KB923789, but
th installation failed everytime. Error code 0x643. Installing the
newest version of Flashplayer did not help, untill I installed the
newest version for both my browsers. It appeared necessary to update
Flash player for Firefox and Internet Explorer separately. After doing
this, KB923789 did not appear anymore in Windows update. Link for
updating Flashplayer for IE an Firefox: http://tinyurl.com/yae429

Sorry, the first link I gave is to the dutch page. The English UK page:
http://www.adobe.com/uk/ You can go to the page for the country and
language you want at the head of the page.

Re: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789) Install Failure
I don't think the MS update for flashplayer has anything to do with FF. I
only had to update the Flashplayer in IE for the update to disappear. I still
have an older version in FF. Of course, MS would like it that the
Flashplayer would not work with FF. What else can you expect? :)

That manual fix is very helpful thanks - to summarise though, it's a bug in
the update software which is not checking versions properly!
/Windows/Downloaded Program Files, solution
I had the same problem. Windows update failed for the flash security update KB923789
Start + Run + %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log revealed an entry near the bottom of the log:-
"Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789)"
The quoted solution below didn't work for me. I uninstalled Macromedia Flash as suggested and installed the latest version 9.0.28.0 from the macromedia.com site. I rebooted XP then tried windows update again and it still failed.
I opened IE and went to youtube.com and started a video then right click it and click "About Adobe Flash Player" and it told me I still had version 7 rather than version 9. Somehow the reinstallation wasn't making it through to IE.
Solution:-
Use Windows Explorer to get to Windows/Downloaded Program Files and right click Shockwave Flash Object, then Update. This is the IE plugins folder I think. Anyway that did the trick, repeating the youtube process told me I finally had version 9.0.28.0.
Having got that done, when I did windows update again it didn't list the flash security update KB923789. End of problem.
Hope this helps someone. I lost an hour or so with this, thanks Microsoft once again you failed.
