DNS dynamic update pending in DHCP
Hello,
Im having a problem and im wondering if someone can help me.
In DHCP the icons of the computers have a pencil in it, it seems it means
this:
"Active lease, DNS dynamic update pending. This address is not available for
lease by the DHCP server."
Does someone knows how to fix this problem?
I installed DHCP on another server and deinstalled it on the
first...settings are all the same...im not using DNS Dynamic update
credentials, i never used this and wondering if i have to now?...DHCP server
is working for the rest 100% ok..
Also using vlans...

Maybe it's an IP configured from the old DHCP server. Did you attempt to
renew all your clients so they get an IP from the new DHCP server?
As for VLANs, that depends on how you have it setup. There are so many
different options to set up a VLAN and if misconfigured, it is difficult to
pinpoint where it's going wrong.

Hello,
Al clients have a new ip address from the new DHCP server.
The old DHCP server is not running anymore.
Vlans are configured correctly.....
ALso the clients are working correctly but i never seen this icon with a
pencil before....and i wonder why the dynamic dns update is pending...

Does the DHCP server have available ips to attrib?

Did you confirm this (as Jorge asked as well)? When you run an ipconfig /all
on the client, I assume it shows the new DHCP?
Did you unauthorize the old one?
Also, the only time I've seen a pencil is in third party DHCP servers.
HOwever, if it is having difficulty updating into DNS, then it may be a red
flag that the incorrect DNS servers are being referenced. This means in an
AD environment, only the internal DNS servers are to be used. If it is
pointing to an ISP's DNS or some other DNS (or even the Linkysys router)
that is not accepting updates or doesn't host the zone, then we have a
mis-configuration.
Can you provide an unedited ipconfig /all of a machine in question and the
DC please (assuming this is your DHCP server). - Thanks!

Assuming that updates are not working:
1. Any event log errors on the workstations or domain controller?
2 .Is the AD DNS domain a single label name?
3. Zone name match the AD DNS domain name?
4. Updates allowed on the zone?
Keep in mind, whenever one of us in the groups ask questions or ask for
configuration information from an installation, it helps to view the actual
config and eliminate the obvious.

Have you assigned a user account with a non-expiring password in the DHCP
scope properties for the DHCP server to authenticate with the DNS server? Or
did you change that password recently?
are you seeing errors in eventvwr.
You can also run network monitor to check what is going on...

We will need to add a #4): If the client Primary DNS Suffix doesn't match
the zone's name that has updates allowed, it cannot register. The Primary
DNS Suffix must match.

We need to add a #5.
Ensure you have a reverse lookup zone for that DHCP scope.

This is what fixed it for me. I had a network of 10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0 with a reverse lookup zone for 10.0.0
After putting in wireless and allowing outside devices on our network, we were running out of address so I changed the scope to 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 but I forgot to change reverse lookup zone. I deleted the 10.0.0 reverse and put in just a 10 reverse lookup and the leases started going through to DNS again.
