Unable to add additional node to cluster due to Error 0x800713de
HI,
I am having a problem adding an additional node to a cluster. The
servers are identical Dell 2950's running Windows Server 2003 R2
Enterprise edition with Qlogic QL2340 (HP FCA 2214) HBA's, connected to
a HP EVA 6000.
I have followed the Cluster Config document to the letter, in order to
present the shared drives to both nodes, and have tested connectivity
successfully. I can create the first node in the cluster, however when
I start the second node and attempt to add it to the cluster, it gets
all the way through the Analyzing configuration only to fail on the
Checking Cluster Feasability.
The errors are as follows:
<Clustername> A multi-node cluster can not be created because the
cluster resource does not support adding nodes to the cluster
<Clustername> Error 0x800713de: The quorum disk could not be located by
the cluster service
I have attempted to add the node again using the Advanced (minimal)
configuration which should skip the enumeration of the shared
resources, however I am still getting the same error.
I have found a couple of group messages detailing the same error, as
well as a MS Article Q331801 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=331801
however the recommended workaround is to use the Advanced (minimal)
configuration which I have done with no success.
Any input MUCH appreciated!
Re: Unable to add additional node to cluster due to Error 0x800713de
OK, so you have the first node in the cluster. Let's do this:
1. In disk management ensure the disks all look fine (Basic disks, primary
partitions, drive letters and labels). Big thing here - no dynamic disks.
If this is all good,
2. Open cluster admin and add the disks to the cluster by creating new
physical disk resources and bring them online.
3. In cluster administrator change the quorum drive to one of those shared
disks.
4. Try adding a new node to the cluster using Advanced Minimum.
5. If it works, test failover of all resources.

Re: Unable to add additional node to cluster due to Error 0x800713de
Hi Chuck,
I deleted the cluster, all of the shared drives, deleted the drives
from the SAN and started again, and this time I managed to set the
cluster up correctly, however in trying to set up an additional cluster
(a new cluster NOT a new node) I am encountering the same issue. This
time however I am getting a warning message when trying to add the
first node to the cluster.
I have created only the quorum disk, ensured that both servers can see
it, and access it, and formatted it and renamed it Quorum and given it
drive letter Q as per the ClstConfig document. However I am getting the
following warning when I run the cluster install on the first node:
Status 0x00138f: The Cluster Resource could not be found.
However the installation proceeds and completes. When however I check
the Cluster Group resources, I find that it has created a Local Quorum,
and not used the Q Drive that I specified that it should use as the
Quorum in the Wizard. When I then try and add the second node, if fails
with the same error as the other cluster this morning:
<Clustername> A multi-node cluster can not be created because the
cluster resource does not support adding nodes to the cluster
<Clustername> Error 0x800713de: The quorum disk could not be located by
the cluster service.
I have deleted and retried from the beginning of the configuration 3
times, and I keep getting the same result.
Any ideas why the wizard is choosing to create a local quorum instead
of using the shared drive Q:?
Thanks,
Leo
