Here is my error message when I try to update.
I am running Windows 2000
[Error number: 0xC80001FE]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
My automatic updates was also disabled.
I have have run several scans. It shows virus or spyware
I see alot of people are having this problem. Does anyone have a solution?
I have been having the same problem. Have you gotten an answer???

Ditto -- I run a student computer lab and about a third of my machines are
giving me this error. Please let me know if anyone finds a solution!

Somebody reported that this works.
1) Stop the Automatic Updates service;
2) Delete C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution folder;
3) Execute Microsoft Update (C:\WINNT\system32\rundll32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite).
It didn't for me however, I'm still looking. It seems it might be that wu
cannot write to some DB used during the update process.
Resolutions
1. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
Stop the Automatic Updates service
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.
Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.
Click OK.
Open the DataStore folder.
Delete all contents of the DataStore folder.
Close the window.
Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
This works!
That doesn't work for me either Monty. I have contacted MS Support,
hopefully they can provide an answer for us.
Just to follow up this only started happening after we tried to use MU rather
than WU site.

To resolve this problem, stop the Automatic Updates service on the affected
client, delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log and
restart the service.
Check first ig you have a similar log error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESENT
Event Category: Logging/Recovery
Event ID: 413
Date: 5/12/2005
Time: 2:46:16 PM
User: N/A
Computer: [computername]
Description:
wuaueng.dll (1280) Unable to create the log. The drive may be read-only, out
of disk space, misconfigured, or corrupted. Error -1032.

Here is what (finally) worked for me for error 0xC80001FE (on W2k SP4):
Step 1. Clean your Temporary Internet Files and reboot your system.
Step 2. Stop the Automatic Update service (Start>Run; fill in: services.msc
>OK; In the application that opens rightclick on AutomaticUpdates and click
Stop - stopping may take a few secs)
Step 3. Now delete or rename the folder C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution
Step 4. Restart the AU service (see Step 2, but click Start instead of Stop)
Step 5. Reboot your system.
Step 6. Run Windowsupdate.
If it works for you, save the procedure, as the same error may happen again
later.

Also check if you have enough disk space.
