Update failure

I have an update pending but is wont install.
The update is
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283)
and the failure code is Error Code: 0x643

Well, let's add my name on the list. And I have four PC's in the house and
mine is the only one that got stuck there. I actually have that update
(Framework) and an additional Windows sec update.

If you had searched the headers this group for "KB917283", you would have
found that the fix has
been posted numerous times. Here it is again:

Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> click
Microsoft .NET
Framwork 2.0, and select "Repair". See if the update installs now.

If that fails to fix it, then download the "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool", Run it,
and use the spin
box to remove Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Leave version 1 alone. After
it uninstalls and
reboots, go to Windows Update and it will show that Microsoft .NET Framework
2.0 needs to be
installed. After that, the update for it (KB917283) will install correctly.

Haven't tried it yet, but am in the process of so doing.

So much for quality software - having to completely uninstall the software
before you can install a security fix.

What we still are running into with a number of gaming communities is the
..NET 2.0 was not the MS FEB06 release on their PC's using WinXP-x86. I have
seen issues (Corrupted .NET) from reinstalling/overwriting .NET framework;
including VGA-Card install discs and a couple outdated download sites (not
MS). This also happens if you have a beta version of .NET Framework
installed, instead of the released version (FEB06). For whatever reason...

The .NET 2.0 is screwed up and MS seemingly has not caught it through
automatic updates.

6: Turn automatic updates on (assuming that is your preference).

7. If this procedure failed to allow update 917283 to work, then repeat the
procedure, adding the following at step 3a: Download
http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip and unzip it.
Run the enclosed application, and select to clean up .NET Framework 2.0. Now
continue above from step 4.
Don, you forgot to supply the error codes, but you did supply the KB article numbers.

I will still stand by what I said of Microsoft (Arogant Bastards), but I have
to give them credit for Windows Live. It allows us to hash out the problems
that Microsoft failed to do during its beta testing. Thanks to ThosRTanner
for the fix to this problem. I followed the instructions that he set forth
in his answer to this problem and it works. Cudos to you ThosRTanner.
Microsoft should pay close attention to the activities on this site as it may
resolve the issues at hand. Good luck on that one.

i had to go to the extreme for my KB917283 update to install correctly.
I 1st did a manual download according to this thread after uninstalling
Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2, then still running into the same
problems with the KB917283 wanting to download and install with Update
on Auto Notify. It would see that it had been downloaded but not
installed, so I would let it install, and it said it did, BUT the same
old Auto Notify would come up and say it needed to be installed. So, I
went to Step 7:

I also manually downloaded the KB917283 - NDP20-KB917283-X86.exe, which
I found by searching for KB917283 on the support as MS.
After installing Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 for the 5th or
6th time, the 2nd time manually, I then rebooted and manually installed
KB917283 - NDP20-KB917283-X86.exe, which is only 755kb, but took about 5
minutes to install.

All is well and working finally ---thanks to the Windows update NG!!!!

I have same problem,
Windows Update will not install in XP, I daul boot XP and Vista via a boot
manager,
Vista Updates will install with no problems, with XP I find manual install
works OK but the Automated method of update for XP gives a failure notice but
no Error Code.

I'm thinking that there could be a conflict issue with the update Automation
derection seeing both OS.

When I try to shut down, I keep getting the message that new stuff is there to be installed. It keeps saying this over and over again even though I shut down saying install.

What I have been trying to download are:

I have tried to clear old stuff and try again as well as one microsoft link but nothing is working.

No thanks to logging a support call...
They tried to get me to believe that it was anything but a Microsoft Problem.
After working through all of their proposed solutions including disabling my
anti-virus and firewall (eeekkk!), still no luck.
The 'final' proposed solution by Microsoft Support was to 'uninstall' my
McAfee Internet Security suite entirely... Can you believe it? I told them
there was no way I was going to flaunt tried and tested IT security policy
(although I had already done so I suppose by disabling the McAfee FireWall
and Anti-Virus) simply to get a Windows update to run. I did not believe that
that was the cause of the problem in any event since my Microsoft Office
updates were installing just fine with all firewalls etc switched ON. I
cannot believe that Microsoft advocates users un-installing all their
Security Protection software to get Windows update to work!

I then started downloading these updates manually one by one and installing
them.
They all work 'the long way round' except KB958624. (With Firewall and
Anti-Virus ON as it should be...)
Which now just leaves me with KB958624...

Anyone at Microsoft... ???

I have been dealing with an error trying to install the KB958624 on a Vista
Machine with SP-1. I just noticed that SP-2 is available. Today I
downloaded SP-2 and the install went in OK. I then checked for new upgrades
and the system told me that I was now up to date, however KB958624 still
shows up as "Failed". Perhaps with SP-2 it is no longer necessary?

One assumes that since the update came out in December '08, it's
included in Vista SP2. Then again ... MS hasn't published a Knowledge
Base article that lists the hotfixes and security bulletins included in
SP2. As they did with ALL of the XP SPs and Vista SP1.

The ONLY list of hotifixes and security updates included in Vista SP2
are listed in an Excel spreadsheet published *only* in the latest
Excel file format ... I'm not about to install an Excel viewer, then the
Compatibility Pack for Word/Excel/PowerPoint that supports the 2007
file formats, and then all updates for the viewer and Comp Packs ...

In event viewer I have several errors of telling me some of the
specified updates failed to install. This was a completely clean fresh
install of vista ultimate 64bit edition. I had nothing else installed
except for hardware drivers.

This has to be a a Microsoft screw up. the version of vista I have is a
complete clean oem copy. I had no anti-virus, (by the way mcaffee is a
known hazard when it comes to any type of updates, be it drivers or
software. Also, It's awful awful security. I've worked on home pc's for
3 years now and have seen enough mcafee issues to avoid it like the
plague. I suggest avira, avg, avast, nod32, spybot S&D, and
Malwarebytes. Not all at once those are just suggestions to choose from.
If a firewalls a concern your router should have plenty of advanced
options to enable depending on the brand.) or any other software except
for the catalyst sweet which comes bundled with ati's driver. Microsoft
has major, major issues with testing their updates. a few scattered
problems here and there are acceptable, but some major examples come to
mind. Any hp or compaq computer with a amd processor would enter a
continuous boot loop when sp3 for windows xp was installed. this was
ongoing for about 2 and a half weeks. multiple updates have caused a
dreaded configuring 3 of 3 boot loop with windows xp. Internet explorer
7 would completely lock up and or fail to connect to a web page after
certain updates on certain machines. Vista frequently would "lose" a
dvd-rom/dvd-+rw drive made by tsst corp which is a major supplier to
major oem's such as hp dell acer and gateway after some updates.
I apologize for the rant but frankly if all that happened was a
failed installation than be thankful. Microsoft has a thoroughly stained
reputation at this point and a sloppy way of fixing bugs. If the
customer experience was first on Microsofts list of objectives than they
wouldn't have a technet support article guiding a customer through the
bowels of their registry to use an oem dvd burner.
