Optimal CPU Temperature ?
I just upgraded my computer's CPu to a P4 3ghz with HT, 1mb cache, 800mhz fsb, and Its been running pretty hot. It idles at 45C and average working temperature is 50-53, and when I run a 3D game, it goes up to 58C. Is that normal? I don't have any extra cooling, just whatever came with the CPU + thermal paste.
Are these temperatues a cause for concern or is it normal?
Re: Optimal CPU Temperature ?
Personally I'd tack on a few case fans if you don't already have any.
I can't say if the CPU temp is normal for that CPU as I tend to use AMD processors. I have heard the new intel CPU's run really hot though so it probably isn't a problem at that temp. Attempting to drop the temp a little more wouldn't be a bad idea though.
Re: Optimal CPU Temperature ?
I just built up a beasty gaming system (to overclock also) and got the Thermaltake Sonic Tower cooler. Its a PASSIVE cooler, and comes with no fan!
I found that at idle my AMD64 3500+ was sitting just under 40centigrade (with no fan remember!) and under heavy 3d gaming load it got up to 58c...
I then overclocked the CPU - pushing the temps higher, until I stuck an 80mm fan in the middle of this giant Sonic Tower, and temps PLUMMETED. It now sits at around 28 idle and 40c max under hours of 3d gaming with high settings (still overclocked several hundred mHz!)
Its a monster of a cooler though so be careful installing it - especially if you have a small case!

If you run a 120mm fan in it (which does fit) it rivals water cooling temps
Re: Optimal CPU Temperature ?
for a stock Pc...those figures sound Ok.... Where are you getting these temps from tho? most motherboard sensors are rubbish....
It is gets too hot...it will crash...if it boots up and runs stable...its probably Ok.
Intel CPU's throttle back if they need to...so they cannot overheat ... in theory
I use a P4 2.8 running at 3ghz

dbagga... I'd be VERY concerned about those temps, they appear to be dangerously high for the hardware's health. :hmm:
