Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461
I cannot get my system to install the update in KB898461. I use auto-update,
but each time I try to install it, it goes about 1/3 of the way, pauses, then
blasts to the end and announces it has failed (sans any error code). I have
also tried installing it using the Windows Update site, and it fails using
that method as well. Finally, I went straight to the KB and attempted to
install it from there (after allowing my copy of Windows XP to be verified as
legitimate for about the 10,000th time). Again, it failed. I have had no
other issues ever with updating, and in fact, installed several other
unrelated updates today. It's just this package. I can't figure out if there
is some setting on my machine causing the problem, or if there is a general
problem with this update that Microsoft has yet to realize or announce.
Anyone else having issues with this or have any ideas what might be going on?
RE:( Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461)'s Solution
You can download this update from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=898461
It hasn't got any problem. You can easily set up it
RE:( Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461)'s Solution
I have downloaded the file and I tried to install it from there (with the
Assistant). No way. The system told me under the title KB898461 Setup-Fault:
The KB898461 Setup interrupted. The KB898461 is not that what it will be... I
wait now for a steady (stable) OS from MS since 1980! 25 years now and I will
still wait some time, but in few years I will wait for it in the haven.

RE: Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)...Yes I too cannot get it to install. May
last updates were June 18th 2005 and today I got back from vacation and see
they wanted to update my Windows Update site which it did automatically then.
so then I cehcked for new updates with the new update site and it said that
KB898461 was there to update. Well it never downloads or installs. Just sits
there and then in a few minutes tells me it failed. I tried it 5 times and
even restarted my computer. So I guess I will not attempt anymore in case it
screws up my WHOLE system like some of the other posts allude to.

Again me (Harry)
I attach the KB898461.log to show what happens with installing the KB898461.
When you look araund (also in French) you will find other users having great
problems (with different manifestations) with that upgrading.

What file was it unable "to get File Version" from?
Why did it fail "to copy spupdsvc.exe to system32"?
I suspect you have a permissions problem in the directories involved.
You could try guessing what the details were which would answer
those two questions and then check them out (e.g. using cacls.exe)
but I would try running FileMon with an input filter of
update (e.g. since the program being executed is update.exe)

Re: Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461
Thank you Robert for your engagement to help me.
I se the same log infos as you, but I have no idea which file version
(12.438) is asked and I have no idea why spudsvc.exe is not copied to
system32. Because I'm not alone with this disappointments to update KB898461
(see in this or also other communities, especially in french). I had since
years never before problems to update Microsofts OS/Programmingtools/Office,
but I had some problems with hidden bugs like this one. I do no more the job
of Microsoft to find out what can be or not. Microsoft never had give me one
cent discount on a corrected version, I had to pay allways the full price.
Now I wait and look around, who says me the truth about the new trick of
Microsoft to sit in a dark corner of my Computer to control me over future
updates? Something must be curious, when so much user araund the world have
ptoblems to install this update (direct via update or via donloaded file)
Anyway, I thanks you for your patience, but I'm a burned child and I have
some nice storys from the last 25 years with Microsoft. I loosed some money
with such unmatured adventures outcoming from Bill's kittchen.

RE: Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461
I am having a similar problem with an update for IE6 for Win XP SP2. It
downloads, but won't install. I get an error message - setup cannot copy file
branch.inf.
Any idea why that should be?

Hi,
I would think you mean branches.inf, and not branch.inf
It could be that the file is read only.
To remove the read only flag, run the following command
from Start/Run
attrib.exe -R %windir%\inf\branches.*

Re: Cannot Install Package Update re: KB898461
To fix the issue with installing KB898461 simply rename the file:
c:\windows\system32\spupdsvc.exe
to
c:\windows\system32\spupdsvc.old
and then try the update again either through Windows Update or from the
full installer which can be downloaded here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
It should now complete successfully and allow you to start getting
other updates as well.

Herr_Mord:
I love you! I have been posting and reading posts all over Microsoft and the
Internet for days and days, and have had about 1000 suggestions about things
that could be/might be/undoubtedly are wrong, and none has resolved anything
-- until this post by you!
PLEASE post this again prominently at the top of the Update forum for all
the poor souls like me who have been tearing our collective Microsoft
technology-based gray hair out trying to get this damned update to install.
You would be performing a major service by doing so.
How did you know this was the problem ... ???
You are my new hero. Thanks again ...
