Error 80072efe and 80072f78 after SP2
Hi,
I have installed WinXP SP2.
I have attempted to download the latest critical updates but I constantly
receive the errors:
Error 80072efe occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls.
Error 80072f78 occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls.
I have looked at the troubleshooting sites but their suggestions have not
worked.
I have attempted to downlaod the patch for KB871260 but when I hit
"Downlaod" a small window appears listing a 501 error or
"The requested Web page is denied by system administrator"
If I then hit the "start the download" link on the subsequent page I either
recive the error that the file was not found o:
"The requested Web page is denied by system administrator."
I have disabled TrendMicro Firewall and real-time scan, as well as the
Windows Firewall.
I do not use a proxy.
I have set all MS windows update sites in the Trusted Zones.
This is very frustrating.
Any ideas or help appreciated.
thanks,
MCU

Addendum.
The Installation History states the failure due to:
Error Code: 80072F78

See if manually downloading and installing this one fixes the problem:
An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer 6 SP1

Re: Error 80072efe and 80072f78 after SP2
Hi Noel,
Thanks for the *very* rapid reply.
I have attempted to manually download the patch but again, the same problem-
unable to download.
It seems I am cursed!
cheers,

Re: Error 80072efe and 80072f78 after SP2
Follow this:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for "While the Windows Update Web site is loading, you receive
Initialization error 0x80072F78"
Otherwise follow the Windows Update Checklist:

Re: Error 80072efe and 80072f78 after SP2
In that case, suspect your firewall!!
check out that the firewall isn't blocking some of the more obscure MS sites
The download site for that rollup is this....
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...XP-x86-ENU.exe
can you get to it directly?
If so, then it may be related to your ActiveX settings, rather than the
firewall

Re: Error 80072efe and 80072f78 after SP2
Thanks Noel and Jupiter,
In the end the firewall on my Modem/router was blocking executables! I was
sure I had turned that off earlier.
All fixed now.
Happy New YEar!
