You can try to add umbfill from umbpci package as a last file to your autoexec.bat which might be able to solve the memory grabbing from Windows. I also never faced any problem with my system with the ram amount that I have, right now I have 2gb of ram. You can even try to set maxfilecache to 32kb or fewer and see if that works.
