In XP, whre you are displaying small icons, and NOT autoarrange, only snap-to-grid, you can drag and positon icons where you want them - is there a way to do that in W7 Pro 64

You are not able to move the icons because auto arrange is enable. You can stop that by right clicking on Desktop > View > Uncheck Auto Arrange. Once ou are done with that you can simply move the icons wherever you want. Also you can sort the same thing back again by enabling Auto Arrange. Auto Arrange fix the alignment of icons on the screen and whenever you refresh the icons goes back to the proper place.
On my W7 64, there is no "auto arrange"
however it is NOT the desktop I am asking about, but rather a regular folder
I can arrange the desktop icons as I desire - but not in a folder
