Upgrading from Celeron processor to Pentium processor
My PC currently has Gigabyte GA-8SIMLP motherboard with a 1.7GHz Celeron processor. I want to upgrade my processor to Pentium 4 2.2 GHz processor. But sometimes locks down, many times it goes into Windows XP safe mode. Can anybody help me make Windows XP work normally on my new processor?

If you are able to access BIOS, then your system is fine. It seems that RAM is not compatible with your new processor. It would be working fine with old processor. Maybe, it’s the RAM that’s causing problem. Problem with Ram causes system to lock up.

You can try Memtest 86+.It can be run from floppy as well as from CD. Many Linux and Ubuntu CDs have Memtest in it. You also need to have manufacturer’s drive on CD. Maybe some driver is missing or needs to be updated. Another cause of this problem I think can be of overheated RAM. I suggest you provide a good airflow to the internals of your laptop.

If after running Memtest 86+ you don’t find the problem. I can say that the problem lies with Chipset you are using. It accepts Memtest kernel but fails to accept Linux kernel or Window kernel. Maybe you can try updating BIOS.

You can dismember the parts and check the connections. It is can be due to lose connections also. If this doesn’t help, I suggest seeking help from Gigabyte service centre.
