Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
I have a desktop in which I have office 2007 installed. Now I upgraded that office 2007 to 2010 on desktop. But after this I have got an issue with some existing files which are crashed, when I opened them in office 2010. Even those files are opening correctly in office 2007.This applies to both formats i.e, .doc and .docx document formats. Anybody have any suggestion regarding this .Please help me.
Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
Actually it is not possible. You can access any office 2003 and office 2007 in office 2010. It may be occurred due to improper installation. I will suggest you to first uninstall the office2010 and than reinstall it again. I think after this you may be able to access the files of both format i.e., .doc and .docx and both the office 2003 and 2007 respectively. This helps you try this.

As you have problem in opening the files of Microsoft office 2003 and 2007 in Microsoft office 2010. First of all I want to ask you a question from where you have installed that office 2010. If you have downloaded it than you should check it, if it is installed properly or not. I will suggest you to download the new one and install it again. It is possible to open the files of both office 2003 and office 2007 in Microsoft office word 2010.
Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
This is happens in many cases when you use the latest version of Microsoft word it fails to open the older files of the previous Microsoft office word. The files sometimes crash at the time of opening them in office 2010. If you Microsoft office is not opening the files and the documents of Microsoft office 2003 and 2007 respectively than your office 2010 may be crashed. It should be reinstalled again
Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
I think this problem can be solved only by checking the office is installed properly or not. Actually all the latest version is able to open the files and the document easily. I think this problem may be due to enable add-ins. Just verify that all the add-ins should be disable. Also rename the .dot-m template and restart the office. Try this it may help you.
Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
It may be due to the other office version installed in the system. You should to reinstall that entire version with office 2010 and shut down the system. Now restart the machine. Than try reinstalling the Microsoft Office 2010. It may not be working due to those other versions of the Microsoft offices. I will suggest you to this it may help you to sort out your problem.

Umm, actually, it is possible. One particular template (.dot) crashes Word 2010 every time on every PC with Word 2010 installed. It also 100% reliably crashed Word 2007 before 2010. The template opens perfectly in 2003.
This is the only document with which we have this problem. Every other Word 2003 created document opens fine.
The template is only two pages long with some text and several modest tables. That's it. Nothing unusual about it, really. It's not infected with any type of malware or macro virus.
Office 2007 and later 2010 were installed correctly.
All machines are Windows 7 x64, for what that's worth.

I have never came across through such problem till now. According to me, every file of MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007 should open flawlessly in MS Word 2010. I am using it, and I never had such problems.
Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
I have a brand new Acer notebook with Windows 7 (64-bit) and Microsoft Word 2010 pre-installed. Today I opened a book that I am writing, which I created in Word 2003, and within a few minutes Word 2010 crashed. This document had never crashed in Word 2003. I also noticed that some of the fonts were wrong. This gives me ZERO confidence in Word 2010.
I have no way to reinstall Word 2010, because it was pre-installed when I bought the computer, and I have no way to tell whether the software is corrupted or if it has a bug. I may have to install Office 2003 on this machine if it will allow compatibility mode.
If you don't know the solution to this crash problem, then keep your opinion to yourself, but if you KNOW how to fix this issue then please reply. Thanks.

This is what happens in many cases when you use the latest version of Microsoft Word can not open the old files from the previous word Microsoft office. The files sometimes crash when opening them in Office 2010. If Microsoft Office is not open files and documents from Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007, respectively, Office 2010 can be killed. You have to reinstall again
Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
The only way to fix the crashed application is to re-install it. Office 2010 is a bit buggy. Recently I lost my data in Excel when it crashed at the time of saving. After that whenever I save my files I save in Windows 97-2003 compatibility mode. You must always choose that to save your word files. Do not keep opening the files or else the data in that will be corrupted. First make a copy of that file and keep it somewhere else. If you have an gmail account then open Google Docs. Upload your file and open it. If it works there then your file not corrupted. If still you can see those strange symbols of boxx and other characters then your data is destroyed.

Re: Word 2010 crashes opening some docs from Word 2003 and 2007
Considering how many users are having this issue I would suggest that it is possible.
It seems there are a couple of possible causes for Office 2010 crashing when trying to open files from an earlier Version.
