Hi
I use Ubuntu and gnome as my default desktop environment. Gnome is a greate desktop envirnoment but for those who have less memory gnome run slow on them. there are some way to speed up gnome. Just issue the following commands.
This will stop nautilus file browser to manage the icons on your desktop.Code:sudo gconf-editor /apps/nautilus/preferences
When that comes up.. uncheck the show_desktop box
Still, if you really need the icon back, then you can go for a light weight desktop environment like xfce and install the xfdesktop4.
I more way to speed up things is to configure the sysctl file. Open the terminal and issue the following command.Code:sudo apt-get install xfdesktop4
After you open this file just add the lines to your fileCode:sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf
If this works with your computer, then you will see improvement in your system after reboot.Quote:
