Try to reinstall the printer and set it for sharing on the computer connected to it. You have to download and install the Vista compatible drivers for the printer from the printer's manufacturer site. Then use Add Printer wizard to add printer.

Configuring File and Printer Sharing Behavior in Windows Vista consists of the following:
- Setting the workgroup name to be the same as the other computers
- Setting the network location type
- Enabling file and printer sharing options
Check this link for above configuration.

Check the following points:
- File and print sharing is turned on and properly configured on the XP desktop
- From vista laptop start "Add a Printer" wizard
- Choose "Add a local printer"
- Select "Create a new port" button
- Choose "Local Port" from the drop down menu
- Click Next
- In the "Enter Port Name" box put the port from Shared Printers folder
- Select the Printer driver from the list provided or use the "Have Disk"
- button
- Give the name to printer and set it as default
- Click Next
- Click Finish after Test Print
