security fail in Windows 7
The F-secure shows the first fail of Windows 7 security. You see, in Windows XP and Vista, Explorer used to Hide extensions for known file types. And virus writers used this “feature” to make people mistake executables for stuff such as document files. That was to rename VIRUS.EXE to VIRUS.TXT.EXE or VIRUS.JPG.EXE, and Windows would hide the .EXE part of the filename. Surely this wouldn't work in Windows 7.
Any suggestion will be appreciated !
Re: security fail in Windows 7
It will work.. but.. anti virus will detect it... It's invisible in the explorer, not file system level, it's saying like - infecting a computer whom doesn't have an anti virus.
Re: security fail in Windows 7
The browser doesn't hide the extension, if downloaded in anything from the browser.
The Action Center warns you that you have no Anti Virus software because?
If the .exe is on removable media, why are you running stuff you don't know the origins of?
Install Quick Heal to check for viruses & malwareBytes to check for malwares.
Re: security fail in Windows 7
What could Microsoft do? Maybe disable the ability to hide file extensions and add some sort of overlay image onto executables that aren’t digitally signed.
Only if you use Internet Explorer to browse the web and Outlook to download your e-mail attachments. There are plenty of other ways to download files from the net: 3rd party web and e-mail clients, BitTorrent and other P2P clients, chat programs etc. Also, you can't rely on such warning dialogs if the file is on a network share or an a USB drive.
