Problem embedding videos into Powerpoint 2003
WinXP Pro w/SP3
Powerpoint 2003 w/SP3
I am embedding a couple of videos into Powerpoint. One is an MPG file and the other is an AVI file. Each file is about 10MB in size. When I dbl click the video files from windows explorer, they play fine in Windows Media Player 11, so I know I have the proper audio and video codecs. But once I embed them into Powerpoint, the MPG file does not play and the AVI file only plays the music and not the video.
What is it in Powerpoint 2003, that disables part or all of the video?
I have tried this on a Vista Business desktop running Powerpoint 2007 and both videos play fine from the PPT and PPS file.
Thanks for the help.
Stan.

On the control panel, go to sounds and audio drivers, under the hardware tab, locate which codecs are installed. Have you checked the file associations? Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types. also Decrease the length of the file path. that location of file on disk .

Again, the videos play fine if opened in Windows Media Player so the proper codecs are installed. But once embedded into Powerpoint that I have the issue. And it can't get any shorter than D:\movie.avi and D:\movie.mpg

Do this Micorsoft Guide helps you any way: PowerPoint can't or won't play my movie file
Does it play in the MCI Media Player?
PPT uses the MCI Media Player, which is what opens when you type mplayer2.exe in the Run box.
If your video doesn't run in it, then it won't run in PPT.
Good luck

The movie file may be in a format that Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 does not support.

Never got this to work. Frustrating when it works in PP2003 on Vista but not PP2003 on XP. We finally decided to omit the video from the presentation.

Hi Stan, this may be a bit late to help you and sorry if that is the case. I have struggled in exactly the same way as you have many times. Video plays just fine in WMP11 but just get a blank screen in PowerPoint usually just with sound. My final solution was to install OpenOffice and import the presentation into Impress (OO PowerPoint equivalent) and all of my frustrations just melted away. (you can also just right click your .ppt file and use "open with" the pick "Impress". I would advice you then save your presentation in the native Impress format.
To be honest, I have found OpenOffice Impress to be so good and reliable that PowerPoint is a thing of the past for me......

Hope this is some help and good luck
