You must be aware that by doing so icon will be removed from the system tray and it turns off notifications for the icon.Anyways, to turn off the system icon:-
- Go to control panel, make all items view.
- Double click on the System Icons icon.
- In the System Icons window you will see the dropdown list, Click on the corresponding list to a system icon and choose Off as per your convenience.
- Click OK button
- And get back to the desktop. Thats it..

You can either do it by right clicking on the Task bar and then properties. Now click on customize button. Now click on the Turn system icons on or off link at the bottom. here you will find the drop down list. Choose as per your interest and click Ok.
you can even choose the Restore default icon behaviors to restore the defaults.
Re: Windows 7:How to turn off the system icons
If you turn off the Power icon, which is there by default, the Power icon will be grayed out and off unless your computer is running with battery power. For example, a laptop with it's battery pack connected or a desktop computer on a UPS backup battery.
