Career in Cybersecurity

Nowadays we know that they are many unethical hacking going on in todays world.But there are very few cybersecurity professionals who protect data and systems in networks that are connected to the internet. Cybercriminals or hackers strike in various ways by virus attacks, which may erase your entire system or someone can steal confidential information from your systems or even break into your systems and modify your files without your knowledge.

Training and Education

The degree and training programs vary widely in their length and scope. Some certificate programs and associate’s degree programs might last a matter of months or up to two years. Whereas, bachelor’s degree programs or master’s degree programs can last up to four years. In the case of a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college, a focus in cyber security or network security might be combined or come under the umbrella of another degree program such as a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information science.

In almost any academic program in cyber security, basic classes would cover topics such as how to build and maintain a network, training in Linux and Windows networks, basic computer programming, network protocols, network intrusion detection, and local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs). Courses in criminal justice, ethics, political science, history, and business are also sometimes included in network security and cyber security curricula.

Specific certifications in the Internet security and cyber security fields abound. Some are brand specific and qualify the individual to work on hardware or software made by a particular company. Others, known as “vendor neutral” certifications, show a general proficiency in the field. One of the best known certification groups is the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, (ISC). This group sponsors several certifications that are well respected in the industry including the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and the Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP). Other organizations offering certification include the SysAdmin, Audit, Network, Security (SANS) organization and CompTIA. While no certification is required for employment in any job, certification can be a good indicator for an employer of a candidate’s experience and focus in the field. Many academic programs incorporate certification preparation into their curricula.

2. Middle Level - IS Manager (Role: Security program management, data security, ploicy creation/maintenance, business continuity/ disaster recovery)
   
   
3. Senior & Top Level - Chief IS Manager (Role: Design and development of information security policy. Regulatory compliance, information security governance)
   
   
4. Senior & Top Level - Security Advisors / Auditors (Role: Advisory services for information security, policy design, risk assessment, compliance to global/industry standards)
   
   
5. Senior & Top Level - Chief Information Officer (Role: Justifying the cost of ongoing and future investments to mitigate information risks, aligning business objectives with a concise security strategy)

Qualifications

Graduate in any discipline, but software engineers would have preference. A good knowledge of networks and understanding of hackers mind is essential. It is recommended that one does a course in Cyber Security. Such courses would help a erson learn the tricks of the trade, it does not help joining a course for a few days, but it is recommended that one joins reputed certificate programs and long term programs. Certifications like CISA (Certified Information System Auditor), CISM (Certified Information Security Management) and CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professionals) would help a person to start a career in Cybersecurity. Other vendor specific certifications like CCSP (Cisco Certified Security Professional) and MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) also help.

You first hav to get the basics clear. After that the TCP/IP must be your second language. You can also try and learn the intricacies of HTTP which will be a good start since it is the number one attack vector for malware/spyware/DDoS. Once you learn HTTP then you can go on to other protocols, some proprietary like Instant Messaging protocols, etc.
