Ping Transmission Failed Error Code 1231
Hi All!
I am working on a wireless network with an XP SP2 on 1 machine as the server & Vista on the other machine. bith the network are active & report to wireless connection working. but the problem is that i am unable to ping from one machine to another.
The IP given the server machine through DHCP by an ethernet connection & ipconfig or all the machine reports of the ethernet connection to be 10.71.0.182. when i ping from the Vista machine i get PING : transmit failed, error code 1231.
if i try to ping from the server the ping request times out. i did a little coding the IPs used on both ends of the wire less connection by putting both in range 192.163.73.x & got different result. this time from the vista machine got no error but isaid ping timing out with destination unreachable.
Can Anyone Help Please !
Re: Ping Transmission Failed Error Code 1231
Have you tried de-selecting TCP IP V6 from TCP/IP setting under the lan adapter as I've seen it cause probs before. It seems to favour V6 over V4 for some reason which I believe is causing the problem so if you only have V4 protocol available it will most likely fix your troubles.
P.S. I'm not sure if it is just my own router but I also find that I sometimes need to perform 'ipconfig /renew' in prompt window to discover the correct DNS.
I fix many computers each day, it's my job... so If this doesn't fix your prob then I'd really like to know cos it hasn't failed me yet
Re: Ping Transmission Failed Error Code 1231
Have you confirmed that the cable/port/switchport config is good? If you can ping localhost, 127.0.0.1, then try pinging the assigned IP address. If that responds OK, then try pinging the gateway. If you don't get a response, than check the speed and duplex settings on the card as well as the subnet mask setting. If that still fails, set up a simple DHCP server and see if you can connect that way. If all else fails try another NIC.
Re: Ping Transmission Failed Error Code 1231
Try removing the network card from within device manager and rebooting.
It should re-detect the card and re-perform all of the bindings.

C:\Users\blin>ping 4.2.2.1
I receive PING: transmit failed, error code 1231 when ping.
Pinging 4.2.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:
PING: transmit failed, error code 1231.
PING: transmit failed, error code 1231.
PING: transmit failed, error code 1231.
PING: transmit failed, error code 1231.
Ping statistics for 4.2.2.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
The problem is my Vista laptop doesn't talk to the DHCP and receve 169.254.x.x IP. After disable the IPv6, I can ping.
Re: Ping Transmission Failed Error Code 1231
Check if the NIC is enabled.
not-enabled NIC can be the cause. Log in as admin and go to
Control-Panel -> system ->Device manager
see if the NIC is enabled, if not, right click it and enable it.

Or it might just be a problem with your UTP cable.
Re: Ping Transmission Failed Error Code 1231
Actually, there is a surefire test to ensure that it is a OS issue. I came across a laptop with this problem, and used a Linux live CD (Ubuntu 9.10) to test the hardware. Once running Linux, both Ethernet and wireless NICs had no issues. I'm still going through the myriad of possible culprits for this issue and will update if I come across a good fix.
