Outlook help with importing messages (I know how your 'supposed' to do it, doesnt work)
Hi. I'm dealing with some problems with Outlook. My parents had outlook express on their old computer (had XP), which crashed. I was able to get the .dbx files for saved messages out of the computer and load them on the new one (has Vista). I've looked through 3 or 4 solutions for this problem, but none has solved it. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Re: Outlook help with importing messages (I know how your 'supposed' to do it, doesnt work)
If you have Outlook Express 6 on the Windows XP PC you can import the messages into it directly from Microsoft Outlook and then copy the Outlook Express data files to the Windows Vista PC. You can then use the import tool in Windows Mail and choose the Outlook Express 6 option.
Set up a temporary account in Outlook Express on the Windows XP PC and select the File menu, choose Import, then Messages, and Outlook (Outlook must be configured and will have to contain the messages you are wanting); then select what folders you want to import. Once the import is complete and you see all of your messages you will need to find out where the data files are stored.
In Outlook Express 6:
- Click the Tools menu, and select Options
- Click the Maintenance tab
- Click the Store Folder button (This will be the path to the files you need)
- Browse to that path and copy any files in that directory to the Windows Vista PC.
On the Windows Vista PC:
In Windows Mail,
- Go to File =>then Import =>then select Messages
- Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6
- Click Next
- Choose Import mail from an OE6 store directory, and click OK
- Click the Browse button
- Browse to the folder that you copied the data stores to. (The files will not show up and you will see a message saying "No items match your search" Its OK)
- Just click the Select Folder button.
- The path should now show up to the left of the Browse button
- Click Next
- Select which folders you want to import and Click Next
This will begin the import process. Within Windows Mail there should now be a folder named Imported Folder containing all imported items.
Re: Outlook help with importing messages (I know how your 'supposed' to do it, doesnt work)
To transfer messages by using the Import and Export Wizard, you must first locate and copy the correct files from the computer where Outlook Express is installed to the computer where Outlook is installed.
Note :- Copying the Outlook Express information to a shared location is not sufficient. You must copy the folder to the computer where Outlook is installed.
Import Outlook Express messages into Outlook
1. In Outlook, on the File menu, click Import and Export.
2. Click Import Internet Mail and Addresses, and then click Next.
3. Click Outlook Express.
4. Select the Import mail check box.
5. Click Next.
6. Click Finish.
7. To save a copy of the import summary to your Inbox, click Save in Inbox.

I would suggest you for using MailNavigator
MailNavigator is a powerful system for retrieving information from the archives of the majority of popular mail programs.
Versions 0.09 and later include the capability of reading mailboxes in DBX (Outlook Express 5, 6) format.
Version 0.12 adds the capability of reading mail in PST (MS Outlook) format.
If you want to simply extract messages from the archives of MS Outlook programs, load the mail folders from MailNavigator, and then export the messages in ASCII format, RFC-822 format or in the MBX format of Eudora Mail.
To do this you should use the menu command : Message | Save as...
