Recommend motherboard with onboard RAID controller
Was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a motherboard with integrated RAID controller for the 6 S-ATA disks?
Does not expect the same performance as a dedicated controller card, all the time they cost at least twice that of a motherboard, but how much difference is there?
Are virtually all motherboards with integrated RAID controller for 6 disks like at this point?
Be used for a simple file server for storage of media files. Want to start with 4x1TB disks with the option to connect the 2 pcs to later.
Shall have the operating system on a separate disk, and that will be most relevant to run the storage disks in RAID 5 if I do not take wrong?
Gbit network is also a requirement. Integrated video is fun, but not necessary.
So there are some who have tips to share?
Re: Recommend motherboard with onboard RAID controller
There is not.
Insert either the software-raid in the OS than using the onboard-scheme.
Online expansion (adding additional disks in the raid), I believe no solutions have the ability to.
Just buy the cheapest you can find with SATA ports and integrated video card, all newer motherboards have gigabit NIC.
Re: Recommend motherboard with onboard RAID controller
Yes there are, the problem is only that the price goes up. Server motherboard has the most usable onboard RAID controllers, I believe Super Micro's X48 has it.
Re: Recommend motherboard with onboard RAID controller
Is not?
I now find quite a lot. I compute with the fact that if they have an onboard RAID system, so it should work well .....
Is that said aware of the difference in performance, but as long as it works and is stable as is I pleased.

There you have the problem, it is neither useful, work, or stable, RAID5 for such integrated solutions will I call madness.
My tip is still to go for the cheapest you can find within your requirements and set up software RAID in the OS.
