This message does not necessarily mean that the drive is defective, it is a problem in the boot sequence of the disc. There is no need to reformat the hard disk in this case.

To solve this problem do the following steps
- Insert the Windows XP CD and boot the PC with this CD.
- When it comes to the interface choose "R" to repair, press the "R".
- In the Recovery Console, enter the command CHKDSK / R / P and let the analysis of the hard disk (Caution this can sometimes be very long).
- Once the scan is complete, in the recovery console enter the command: Fixboot
- Remove the Windows XP CD drive and restart.

If it be the connector cable problem then replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable.
If it's a BIOS settings problem then load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support.
