Red Faction: Guerrilla will be Released on June 9

THQ has finally confirmed the release of the third-person shooter Red Faction: Guerrilla. The game will be released for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The publisher has confirmed to Shacknews that the downloadable demo of the game is expected for consoles on April 23 and that the game will be officially released on June 9.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is set on Mars and players get to play the role of insurgent fighters, 50 years after the original Red Faction and 45 years after Red Faction II was released. The fighters battle for liberation against the oppressive Earth Defense Force.

Developed by Volition, the new Red Faction: Guerrilla promises high action gameplay with improved weapons, explosives, and re-purposed mining tools as well as vehicles. This third installment of Red Faction is set in an open-world action scenario.

Volition confirmed the release date with Shacknews, along with the date showing up on various retailer listings. Additionally, a downloadable demo is planned to release on consoles on April 23.

Unlike the first two PS2 Red Faction games, which were first-person shooters that placed heavy emphasis on destructible environments, Red Faction: Guerrilla is an open-world third-person action game. That also places a heavy emphasis on destructible environments (some things just never change).

Unlike previous Red Faction titles, which were all standard first-person shooters with the then-novel gimmick of offering players a chance to destroy the scenery with their weapons, Guerrilla is a third-person, open-world action game. A stylistic shift no doubt influenced by the recent success of the genre as seen in Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3.

Those who lack the patience to wait more than two months for the game will be pleased to hear that a demo is planned for release on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on April 23.

Red Faction: Guerrilla will not be anything like Saints Row 2. The humor and madness of the game set in Stillwater are gone. Mars is gritty and very, very red, with miners rebelling against the oppressive rule of the Earth Defense Forces. The player joins the rebellion and will do most of the heavy lifting in the fight for freedom. And now that Volition has completed this game, let's hope that it moves onto making Descent Freespace 3.

The third Red Faction deviates a bit from Volition's past work on the series--instead of a linear first-person shooter, Guerrilla's a third-person action game set in an open world.
