I was using the cable net with the unlimited package.....but its the charges were really high and killing.
So I thought to switch over to MTNL broadband connection. Ideally, as per my plan I should receive the speed of 1 - 2 Mbps but currently I am getting only 256 kbps....which is very less.
Do I need to do some settings ? How can I speed up my internet speed ?
Can anybody provide me some useful ideas to deal with this...
Perform speed test for MTNL internet speed. If it still shows the figure ranging from 1mbps- 2mbps, then there is a block on port 80(http port).
You will notice that you will get impressive speeds on torrents, but not on http downloads...... check
I am facing same problem. I am from North India and from the past 15 days I am getting speeds like 256-500kbps on HTTP downloads.
Although MTNL speed tester shows the speed results around 1800Kbps, I am receiving very low speed compared to it.
Even on microsoft.com I am getting a download of 50Kbps - 400kbps.

Which MTNL plan you are using ? On MTNL most of the people get 50 kbps speed while downloading. If you are in 512 kbps plan then you will get 40 to 50 kbps speed.
I'm using 256 kbps unlimted plan and till recently i was getting amazing speed the torrent download reaching upto 200KBps(believe it or not)...but i dont know what happened of late....can it be because of an open joint in my connection??

I have try to find it out that many people are facing such kind of issues when i asked some of them i came to know that dude to heavy traffic and more user connected but they told me that they will fix this issue in few days and hope you will be getting your speed back in few days at the same time i would recommend you to launch a complain about the same.
This has happen because of low traffic and availability of server. Whenever you download something the speed depends on the traffic and the usage of downloading server. If the server is busy then it will send you a limited packets. But if it is free then you will get great speed. Usually at the time of night the downloading works much better.
