TopCon GRS-1 finds you within 1 centimeter

Topcon Positioning System's (TPS) new GRS-1 is the world's first fully integrated dual-constellation, network-enabled RTK rover system. It is an all-in-one handheld GNSS receiver and field controller with high-speed processor, increased memory, built-in camera, compass and bar code reading function.Topcon’s GRS-1 Windows Mobile-based handheld, built for surveying, brings a whole new level of precision to positioning. The 3.7-inch touchscreen device not only utilizes GPS with 72 channels–compatible with US and Russia’s Glonass satellites–but is WAAS-compatible (wide area augmentation system) and has a snap-on RH-1 accessory that when combined offer a positioning margin of error of 1 centimeter horizontally and 1.5 centimeters vertically.

The GRS-1 (Geodetic Rover System) was designed with two primary system design goals: Smaller size and weight, and lower-than-expected cost. According to Mark Contino, vice president of survey and GPS sales, the GRS-1 "packs all the power of a full GPS + GLONASS dual-frequency receiver, cellular modem and Windows PC into a very small, very powerful package."

Designed primarily as a GPS network rover receiver, the GRS-1 "provides a small, lightweight rover and a price to fit any budget," he said. "The new receiver has DGPS capability with an internal L1 antenna for GIS and navigation. Add the PGA-1 external antenna and connect to your local GNSS network via the internal modem, and instantly move to dual frequency, dual constellation GNSS centimeter RTK accuracy. The GRS-1 can also be used as a static post processed receiver system."

The GRS-1 runs on a relatively powerful 806 MHz Marvell PXA320 CPU with Windows Mobile 6.1, 256 MB of RAM and 1 GB of flash storage. Aside from GPS and real-time kinematic (via RH-1) positioning connectivity, the GRS-1 features Bluetooth, 802.11b wireless LAN, and an optional GSM or CDMA cellular radio. It has a 2 megapixel camera though I’m not sure if there’s native picture geotagging support. Memory expansion is possible via an SD slot and there is also a single USB port.

That’s right, the GRS-1 comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera with autofocus for taking pictures. Store photos on-board with the 1GB of Flash memory or use the external SD card slot for additional memory.

Expansion Connector

Weatherproof expansion port allows for the addition of the RH-1 unit. The RH-1 will allow the GRS-1 to communicate with radio based base stations for RTK operation. It is compatible with all previous radio types that are currently in use with Topcon GNSS systems. This includes Digital UHF, Spread Spectrum, and FCS enabled UHF radios from all previous Topcon systems.

Internal Magnetic Compass

Utilizing compass bearing with GNSS positioning, the magnetic compass allows for additional measurements to be taken from a single location.

Extra Memory

With 1GB Flash standard, the GRS-1 is loaded with memory. But if you need more, the SD card slot and the mini USB Host functionality can provide additional memory. Use the USB mini port as both a Host and Client. This functionality allows for expanded memory and easy file transfer through USB flash drives or SD memory cards.

The 1.5 pound Topcon GRS-1, including a 2500 mAh battery, is available now for an undisclosed price and is packaged with the company’s TopSurv surveying software.
