Lightweight OS to start as soon as possible
Hello, I wanted to know if there was an OS or distribution of linux that starts very quickly, according to just listen to music and surf the internet. In fact I would not be obliged to start xp, when I want to do some basic tasks. If possible I'd like an OS that boots in less than 10s. Thank you for your help!
Re: Lightweight OS to start as soon as possible
Besides DOS, I can not see anything.
That's why some manufacturers began to exit the BIOS that include mini-OS (based on GNU / Linux) for these tasks. You have such and Splashtop Express Gate.
This is also why Microsoft are working to speed their boot OS.
The NETBOOK also boots faster with the original delivered system like Xandros or Linpus Lite, because they are strictly oriented versions of the material they will manage.
Re: Lightweight OS to start as soon as possible
Xubuntu will be loads faster than Ubuntu, but if Ubuntu doesn't support your laptop, Xubuntu support will be the same. For the cost of a stack of CDs you can try out a bunch of distro's livecds.
I may be wrong about this, but if your hardware isn't supported on the newest kernel, there isn't much you can do by switching distributions.
If disk space is an issue DSL or Puppy Linux are worth a shot.
You can also try antiX, puppy, or damn small linux on your specs. They'll all internet just fine.
Re: Lightweight OS to start as soon as possible
My friend recently brought an old Compaq desktop back to active duty with PCLinuxOS. It runs fine with 64MB of RAM. To install it though, he had to add another 64MB temporarily to get the LiveCD going, since the OS installs through there. Once it was installed, he yanked out the extra RAM he added and it ran without a problem from there.
