Cannot start DHCP Client - Access Denied: error 5. Please help
hi everyone,
Hope you can help. I have a new server with Windows 2003 R2 (running at
least SP2) was running fine in the past two weeks.
However, I just rebooted it after some application configuration
(non-network related). After the reboot, the server could not connect to the
network. I found out the DHCP client was off. So I manually start it, but it
told me error 5, cannot start DHCP client - Access Denied.
I tried to modified it and change it to static IP and it worked. It just did
not work with DHCP. I also checked with my DHCP server with other DHCP
clients but they are all running fine.
Any ideas how to resolve this problem?
Thank you very much for your help!!

It's a server? You should be using a static or reserved IP. Is DHCP working
for your desktop clients? Don't say yes simply because they are able to
login because as long as the lease is good to go so are they. Go to a
workstation and do an ipconfig /release nd try renewing with ipconfig
/renew..
Re: Cannot start DHCP Client - Access Denied: error 5. Please help
THank you for your response. As mentioned, my dhcp server is fine, which I
had done the ipconfig /release /renew basic troubleshooting first. But I jsut
did not put down the detail here.
Also, I have mentioned "the server" dhcp client service could not start. So
most likely it could be that server having problem, or GPO...etc... I think.
I also should have put down that new server is in the middle of
configuration before I assign a static IP (for some reasons). I did not put
that down until you ask me now.

This problem usually occurs if you have changed permissions in the registry. In most cases, this error can easily be solved by granting extra permissions in the registry.
To make the permission changes in the registry, do the following:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit and click OK
- Navigate to the following key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp
- Right click the key DHCP and click Permissions. Click Add, type network service and click OK
- Select NETWORKSERVICE and check the Full control box to grant NETWORKSERVICE full control on the DHCP key.
- Click OK to apply the changes and to close the window

Your solution is exactly what is said at MS site. Thanks though. I have already figured out how to fix it. I had to add permissions to Tspip key, in addition to Dhcp.
