Pc restarts when add new HDD
I have a 80 Gb HDD IDE, on which I have installed Xp and vista, The drive consists of 3 partitions,.
Now I attached 160 Gb SATA, without making any changes to BIOS, SATA HDD got detected as well, But when I Start XP I get a BSOD, and PC restarts itself.
The same does not occur in VISTA.....
I formatted the SATA HDD in vista using Disk Management.....And made 4 Partitions of 33, and remaining 40 gb each....
I tried loading Xp again, but still the same issue, it restarts......
I know that most probably, if I reinstall Xp the system will detect the drives and will work fine, But wanted to know the cause of this condition......also I would like if someone game me the solution of the problem , rather than me going for the reinstallation of Xp again.....
Also are there any settings to be done in the bios when adding sata HDD to system...
Also how to configure RAID

Re: Pc restarts when add new HDD
It could be a driver problem, I've had windows restart for no apparent reason and eventually I tracked it down to a bad driver. Please let us know what version of windows you have, and if your running 2k or XP jump into your control panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer right after a reboot and check the system section and see if it gives a yellow warning or red warning and the software section and see if you have a yellow warning or red warning and tell us what error is being given.
Re: Pc restarts when add new HDD
Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Properties' and select the 'Advanced' tab. Under the 'Startup and Recovery' section, click the 'Settings' button. Under 'System Failure' uncheck the 'Automatically restart' box and make sure the 'Write an event to the System log' box is checked. You'll probably also want to change the dropdown box under 'Write debugging information' so it doesn't do a complete memory dump - set it to none or small memory dump.
This won't fix your problem but hopefully you'll get a BSOD and associated log message which will explain what caused the crash. That's where the fault finding starts
Re: Pc restarts when add new HDD
Not having the problem on a restart would indicate the you hard drive is slow in starting up. If its been spinning for a while (like when you restart) then it works.
Replace your hard drive. reload windows then try to add the old hard drive and copy the files you need/want. After you have recovered your data (or given up trying) discard the old hard drive - it's due for a complete failure soon.

Dude, the HDD are working fine, I mean completely fine.....I had come up with this issue long back, when a reinstallation of OS worked (had not posted earlier, becoz it was of least concern, now I am curious).....the drives are working in Vista as well....The issue here is that there is something wrong with the OS, driver etc that is causing this BSOD, and I wanted to know the reason for that....
Also since I am working now, will try to post the bsod message after 10:00 pm today...
Also thanks dr.v and Samsher....
