What is Gobuntu?

Gobuntu is an official derivative of the Ubuntu operating system that was conceived to provide a distribution consisting entirely of free software.

Because Ubuntu now incorporates a "Free Software Only" optional installer, the Gobuntu project was rendered redundant in early 2008. As a result Canonical made the decision to officially end the Gobuntu project when version 8.04 is released. As of January 2009 the release of Gobuntu 8.04 had been delayed due to inactivity within the Gobuntu community as a result of the announcement of the pending end of the project. Gobuntu 7.10 was still the current release as of February 2008.

At the end of December 2008 the Gobuntu project status was listed as "relatively inactive"

Why would you want Gobuntu?

If you are looking to build a free software distribution based off of Ubuntu, or you wish to use an operating system that only provides you with truly free software and content, you should consider trying Gobuntu.

Please note that because running Gobuntu on most laptops and many desktops will be difficult, Gobuntu is intended for experienced Linux enthusiasts at this time.
