corrupt cdrom.sys

I am running Windows Vista 64 bit which was working great uptill now but I have a problem that I dont know. Recently I noticed that my CD writer and DVD drive are not being recognized by Vista. They work fine upon startup, e.g. I can boot off the Vista DVD, etc. But Vista itself does not recognize them.

On going onthe Properties of the devices, it showed that the Driver (c:\Windows\system32\Drivers\cdrom.sys) have been corrupted, but neither uninstall/reinstall or nor chkdsk, sfc, or Restore has been able to fix the problem. I also did the DVD Startup Repair option.

Can anyone tell me some tips so that I can get my drives working again without a complete reinstall?

My best guess is that a filter driver was installed that is causing the device stack for your burner to break (which could be caused by a myriad of reasons).

Instead of deleting them, to make sure this fixes the issue, just rename the keys to UpperFiltersOLD and LowerFiltersOLD, that way you can restore them if this doesn't help. This will break whatever applications depend on these filters...so if this does fix the issue, then you can go through and check each filter one by one to see which is causing the issue and only remove that one (and break the smallest number of apps possible).

Can you see the CD drive in Device manager?
If so, remove/uninstall it.
Reboot twice.

If you cannot see the CD drive in Device manager - can you see it in BIOS?

If the drive is not being "seen" in BIOS there could be four things:
1. Faulty drive.
2. Faulty motherboard.
3. Incorrect BIOS settings.
4. Bad/loose connection.

Make sure the drive hasn't been disabled in BIOS.
If that doesn't help I think you should have the computer repaired by the manufacturer

This problem can be caused if you are loading the ATAPI real mode CD-ROM driver in the config.sys.

Edit the config.sys file from the command prompt (cmd.exe)
C:\> edit c:\config.sys
Find the Device= line that contains the CD-ROM driver
Edit the line so the /D: switch does not contain the word value "cdrom", for example
Device= /d:cdrom
to
Device= /d:mydrive
Save the file
