Alternative Method
An alternative method with more steps was suggested by Shane in the comments. If the above doesn't fix your problem, you can use these steps.
- Go to the command prompt icon in the Start menu under Accessories and right click the icon: click "Run as administrator".
- Paste: "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" and hit Enter and also paste "powercfg -h on" and hit enter just to be safe.
- Open Control Panel and type in "Hibernate" in the Search.
- Click "Turn hibernation on or off"
- Click "Change advance power settings"
- Scroll to and expand the "Sleep" option.
- Select "Off" to the "Allow hybrid sleep" option.
- Scroll to and expand the "Power buttons and lid" option.
- Select "Hibernate" for the "Sleep button action" option. 10. Select "Hibernate" for the "Start menu power button" option.
- Hopefully one of these methods will solve your problem!
Re: re-enable hibernate feature in Windows Vista
Occasionally you may have to Re-Enable Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Vista. The problem occurs when the Disk Cleanup Tool disables the hibernation file. The hibernation file must be enabled to access the hybrid sleep feature and the hibernation feature in Windows Vista.
When the hibernation file is disabled, and the hybrid sleep feature is enabled, a backup of open programs and open files will not be saved to the disk when you use the sleep feature in Windows Vista. Additionally, if the computer loses power while the Windows is in sleep mode, open programs and open files will not be recovered, and any unsaved work will be lost.
To resolve this problem in Windows Vista, run the powercfg -h on command at a command prompt to enable the hibernate feature and the hybrid sleep feature.
Press Windows Key and R to bring up the Run Dialog box and type powercfg -h on.

How to Re-Enable Hibernate in Windows Vista After Disk Cleanup
When using Windows Vista with the Classic mode applied under your Start menu properties, you may notice the hibernate option that was once on your shutdown menu is no longer there after running a disk cleanup. Let's look at a simple way to restore your hibernate feature.
- Right-Click the Start button. It's the one pictured at the top of this article. In the Run box, type the letters cmd. The Command Prompt window appears. The command prompt will have look similar to the following:
- C:\>Users\Your user name> with a blinking cursor next to it.
- At the command prompt, type the following command: powercfg /hibernate on
- Hit the Enter key. You have just restored the hibernate option. Close the command prompt window, and then navigate to the shut-down menu: Start > Shutdown
- Click the arrow to view your options for shutting down in the drop-down menu. Hibernate will now appear as an option.
