Mouse not working HELP!!

Hey everyone I have a problem with my mouse (microsoft notebook optical 3000) I am running XP SP3 and have had my mouse for a while now. It suddenly stopped working. the usb receiver seems to be fine.The mouse batteries have been changed. I just cannot get it to communicate with my computer. When I plug in the receiver it immediately lets me know that there is new hard ware and tries to install but comes up unsuccessful. I have now spent hours trying to figure this out. My device manager sasys that I am missing a driver. I downloaded intellipoint software that says communicates with all microsoft mice but no luck. any ideas anyone?

To check whether your mouse is working properly you could do one simple thing try to attach your mouse to the different computer and see whether it works fine with it.

and also please note that this mouse require Microsoft IntelliPoint software version 6.1

I haven't tried it on another PC but I have tried to re-sync the mouse and receiver multiple time no luck. It says I'm missing a driver but I cannot get one because I don't know what Im looking for, Any ideas?
