Seadragon: iPhone application signed by Microsoft
To everyone's surprise, Microsoft has chosen to test the iPhone and will spearhead the launch of its mobile application to view images, seadragons. Logically named seadragons Mobile, which allows browsing with an impressive level of depth in large images without the need to download the full. The data needed to display the area by the user are called direct effect, to offer within the image navigation very fluid, even on a terminal as the iPhone is not designed to manage images very high resolution.
On iPhone, seadragons Mobile is in the form of an application of 1.1 MB, in which some fifty images are referenced: satellite photos, images from space or postcards high resolution can be explored at using the touch screen. A strong connection, 3G or WiFi, is required in that large volumes of data are exchanged. Much less that it had download the whole image.
Outcome of Microsoft Live Labs, seadragons also in its mobile version to import and display galleries made from Photosynth, which offers software to reconstruct a space in three dimensions from a series of photographs of a place. Computer memory found for this technology through DeepZoom, its implementation in Silverlight.
Why this application on iPhone, and not on the home platform, Windows Mobile? According to Alex Delay, product manager in Microsoft Live Labs, the iPhone is the only terminal as widely distributed around the world to have the graphics capabilities required to report seadragons. It can download seadragons Mobile for iPhone via iTunes, or explore the different implementations of this technology (Ajax, Silverlight), via the Live Labs site. Other applications iPhone would be under development at Microsoft, beginning with a port of TellMe, an information service taking advantage of voice recognition.
