Recovery of files on Mac

Well, I have a Mac for 4 months, I use an external hard drive to store and save all my data.

Everything worked very well until today.

I connected this afternoon, has turned my DD, and a strange noise occurred, a small resort, I panic while disconnected (with ejection etc, all well as it should). Then I restarted the machine, and now impossible for the computer to read my SD.

There seems to be a big concern or I urgently need to recover my files ... I know there are PC software to recover data on damaged DD but on a Mac is this possible? And if so, what software is the most efficient and least risky?

It seems that this is a hardware problem. The external HD have a separate power supply? If so, it may have slammed (by exmple is the great specialty of LaCie, I have two in this case). If the external HD is no longer under warranty, the simplest is to open it to extract the disc (two pins out) and install it in another box external (USB or Fire wire) or a USB adapter / IDE (Pixmania and eBay among others) or a stand (Macway). It is difficult to know if the ear within DD is dead.
Have you tried to mount it on another Mac? Unlikely, but you never know.
