Configure the internet address

We were trying to Migrate our SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. The procedure went fine without any problem until we reached Internet Address management. Here we stuck with the following error message:

“Windows Small Business Server 2008 cannot open port 25, 80, 443 and 987 to the IP address of the server. In order to receive e-mail and other information over the internet, you must manually open those ports.”

I don’t know why the error is saying like this though my ports are open on Fortigate-50B router. Also I am able to access to the internet through this SBS 2008 and other PCs over LAN.

Any idea? Somebody please provide some working solution.

Most probably the cause of the error is that SBS 2008 is not able to automatically configure the router-. You will need to configure the router manually. As SBS 2008 is taking over the SBS 2003 box, so the port forwards must be changed to reflect the IP of the SBS 2008.

1. If you want to manually open a port, follow these steps:
2. Click Start, and then click My Network Places.
3. Under Network Tasks, click View Network Connections. (Or, right-click My Network Places on the desktop, and then click Properties.)
4. Right-click the connection that you use for the Internet, and then click Properties.
5. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings.
   
   • Note If the Settings button is unavailable, ICF is not enabled on this connection, and you do not have to open any ports (because they are all already open).

7. In the Description box, type a friendly name. For example, type File Sharing : Port 445.
8. In the Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network box, type 127.0.0.1.
   
   • Note You can specify the IP address of an internal computer. But you typically will use 127.0.0.1.
9. In the External port and Internal port boxes, type the port number. Generally, this number is the same.
10. Click either TCP or UDP, and then click OK.
11. Repeat steps 1 through 9 for each port that you want to open.
