How to save mobile phone energy

The less energy we all use, the less there is need to produce it. That’s good news for the planet because at the moment a lot of electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. This emits greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the major causes of global warming.

Charging your phone for four hours every week uses around 800Wh of energy a year. Although this isn’t a huge amount (having a 60W light on for the same amount of time would use 12,480Wh in a year) it’s still significant. You can cut how often you need to charge your phone by:

• Adjusting backlighting brightness, saving 15%
• change the update interval for email, saving 10-50%
• change the update interval for the browser, saving 5-30%
• Switch off application when not needed, saving 5-30%
• Switch off WLAN when not needed, saving 2-10%
• switch off Bluetooth when not needed, saving 2-10%
