Can we verify a program is free of viruses?

Hello,
My freind Gave me program to install but I'm afraid to install it as it may contain virus. the last time my Pc got infected. I had to shell out lots of money to repair it .so It is possible to check a file is virus free or not before Installing it ?

Havent you heard something like antivirus thing.well if not then download any good antivirus and try scanning that file for viruses.

thanks philips for your help. as most of the time antiviruses are unable to scan files properly these will be reallly useful
