reloading xp-The file iaStor.sys could not be found

I am trying to reload XP using the recovery disc it came with, when laptop reboots during installation, I get a blue screen with 'The file iaStor .sys could not be found. Press any key to continue'. When I do this it reads 'Setup failed' Press any key to restart.
I have temporarily loaded XP on laptop using retail CD from my desktop, but get the 'iaStor' messages when trying to reload using the recovery disc.
I do not want to activate my retail cd on the laptop.

Any ideas would be appreciated, whilst I am not totally computer illiterate please keep them as simple as possible. Thank You.
